About

Little Village Nursery School offers art, music, and play in both a Parent & Me program and a preschool program. Saturday morning classes give toddlers time to explore art, music, and play in a preschool setting alongside a parent or guardian. The preschool program includes three age-grouped classrooms called the Yellow Room, Blue Room, and Red Room, each using a developmental, play-based curriculum.

• Ages: 1–5 years old
• Schedule: Saturday morning classes, plus a Monday–Friday morning program with optional afternoon extended care

Little Village Nursery School is a cooperative, play-based preschool and nonprofit co-op that has been welcoming families since 1947. The school describes its mission as believing that young children learn best through play and that parents grow best through community. Its program philosophy is implemented through an approach termed “Emergent Curriculum,” which is described as constantly evolving in response to children’s changing needs and interests, parental and community interests and concerns, and teachers’ priorities. The teaching team is described as bringing decades of experience, and the school notes that it is building a tight-knit community of children, parents, and longtime teachers, with experienced educators and active parent participation. As a co-op preschool, parents volunteer their time and talents and are active participants in their child’s school experience, and the school states that everyone works together to create a warm, supportive, and thriving environment for children to learn, play, and grow. The school notes that tours are held regularly.

According to the school’s history, a small group of parents formed a cooperative nursery school in Los Angeles in 1946, and Little Village Nursery School has been welcoming families since 1947; it now describes itself as having an 80-year history. The Parent & Me Program is listed for children 12–36 months as a gentle introduction to school for the youngest children, and the Preschool Program is listed for ages 2–5.5 years, with the Yellow Room for ages 2–3, the Blue Room for ages 3–4, and the Red Room as a Pre-K room for ages 4–5.5. The curriculum is described as focusing on developing social, emotional, and academic skills through play-based learning.

The school states that it values partnering with parents to educate and support them through their parenting journey and that families work together to create a community. One parent, Sara R., says that her boys are thriving in the environment, receiving personalized attention and gaining social skills while being exposed to science, art, and music. Tanisha B. comments that there is no turnover in staffing and calls Little Village “one of a kind.” Allison B. describes it as a wonderful community with experienced, loving teachers and a director guiding children through the preschool years. Christopher C. describes Little Village as a nurturing environment where kids explore new things, get creative, have fun, and meet and play with other children, guided by experienced, kind-hearted teachers and staff. Michele B. says her kids come out prepared for kindergarten academically and socially, respectful of adults and peers, and that her family made lifelong friends at the school. Michael C. says the school teaches how to interact, share, and resolve differences, and that families become extended family, with longtime teachers. Rick S. states that teachers are at Little Village “for life, not a job.”
