UCLA BruinCorps Tutoring states that its mission is to increase the literacy, language arts, and math skills of students in grades K–9 so they perform above basic skills level or at the proficiency level for their grade, and to prepare them to enroll in an “a-g” course curriculum in middle school and high school for college admission and higher education. UCLA BruinCorps is described as a community service learning program whose members are committed to serving the needs of the community, most significantly youth, and for whom commitment to service and to community is a hallmark. BruinCorps members serve as role models and help students see that college is attainable. UCLA BruinCorps was launched in 1997 as a community service learning program to provide service to the Los Angeles community and learning opportunities for UCLA students.

The America Reads component of UCLA BruinCorps is UCLA’s response to President Clinton’s America Reads Challenge, a national program to help young children read well and independently by the end of third grade. America Reads seeks to engage eligible Federal Work-Study students in providing tutorial services to children in grades K–5, and tutors in America Reads are trained to help students become proficient in language arts for their respective grade level. The America Counts component provides tutorial services in math and engages UCLA students in providing tutoring assistance in basic math, pre-algebra, and algebra to students in grades 6–9, with the stated goal of helping them gain a greater understanding and familiarity with math while improving their math grade. America Reads was launched in October 1997, and America Counts was launched in October 2000.
