UCLA BruinCorps Tutoring

UCLA BruinCorps Tutoring offers in-classroom and after-school tutorial assistance that includes small group tutoring and one-on-one or individual tutoring. The program provides tutorial services to children in grades K–5 in language arts and in math, and offers tutoring assistance in basic math, pre-algebra, and algebra for students in grades 6–9. It also provides college preparatory information and college preparatory workshops.

• Ages: 5–15 years old
• Schedule: 2–3 times per week for up to 33 weeks

UCLA BruinCorps Tutoring’s mission is to increase the literacy, language arts, and math skills of students in grades K–9 so they perform above basic skills level or at the proficiency level for their grade level, and to prepare them to enroll and do well in an “a-g” course curriculum in middle school and high school for college admission and higher education. UCLA BruinCorps was launched in 1997 as a community service learning program to provide service to the Los Angeles community and learning opportunities for UCLA students, with a goal of providing equal access to educational opportunities to under-resourced communities throughout Los Angeles. BruinCorps members are committed to serving the needs of the community, most significantly youth, and serve as role models to help students see that college is attainable. America Reads, launched in October 1997 as UCLA’s response to President Clinton’s America Reads Challenge, engages eligible Federal Work-Study students in providing tutorial services to children in grades K–5, and America Counts, launched in October 2000, engages UCLA students in providing tutoring assistance in basic math, pre-algebra, and algebra to students in grades 6–9.
