The program includes a Coding Fundamentals Track, a Computer Science Track, a USACO Competitive Programming Academy, a Machine Learning and Artificial Intelligence Academy, and a Girls Coding Academy.

Mentors are engineering students from Stanford University and UC Berkeley, plus advanced specialists from other schools, with Southern California mentors studying Computer Science at UCLA. Breakout Mentors has a team of 50+ mentors, and over 90% of students keep coding long-term. The program was started in 2011 by a recent Stanford Engineering graduate, and for nearly 15 years its mentors have worked with thousands of students. The founder is Brian Skinner.

For learners in Southern California, Breakout Mentors pairs students with mentors studying Computer Science at UCLA and works with students in the Los Angeles area including Burbank. Testimonials from parents describe students progressing from Scratch to Java, building games from scratch, exploring CodingBat and other computer science tutoring websites, working with APIs and data visualization, and advancing in USACO competitive programming and school computer science classes.
