• Ages: 5–18 years old
The mission of Velvet Noses Horse Ministry is to connect horses with humans to educate, encourage, and enrich the lives of both on the foundation of God’s love. The vision is to provide a safe environment to care for and connect with horses and begin to learn about them and learn from them, and it is described as a place for families to enjoy the ranch and a peaceful atmosphere while educational lessons are given with God’s love. The stated goal is to learn and grow through positive reinforcement and encouraging words to promote personal growth in a relational environment, and the ministry uses the slogan “Changing lives one human and one horse at a time.”
Velvet Noses Horse Ministry is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that provides community services to SLO County and connects horses with humans to bring love, leadership, connection, and positive self-esteem. The ministry offers a place for unwanted horses to be cared for, lovingly re-homed, and made an essential part of the ministry, and it is run by a group of experienced animal lovers with like-minded hearts for helping both horses and humans. The team notes that they do not have the capabilities at this time to offer Hippotherapy or Equine Assisted Therapy.
The leadership team includes founders Mike and Libby Zaiser, helpers Emerald and Kaia, and board member and ranch hand/assistant to Libby named Amy. Emerald is a Family Nurse Practitioner and also works in Integrative Mental Health. Mike and Libby have been passionately involved with educating children and adults about horses for more than 15 years and have owned a landscape business for 30 years. Amy has worked in finance, law enforcement, and the medical field and is described as a strong believer in Jesus.
Parents and participants have shared feedback such as a child begging to go more than once a week and having a favorite horse named Luna, and one child calling the instructor “the best horse teacher ever.” Other comments mention children loving time with the animals, describing the therapy program as successful, and thanking the program for providing a place for kids to thrive, grow, and learn. One parent shared that their child could not stop talking about riding and wrote “Best Day Ever!” on the calendar after a session.
