About
Outdoor Science Education Programs (OSEP) offers nature-based outdoor education where children learn about nature, art, Indigenous culture, and how to responsibly recreate. The program includes age-appropriate, field-based learning opportunities that cover age-appropriate science concepts and encourage exploration. Activities also focus on learning how to become stewards of the land and waters around them.
• Ages: 5–17 years old
• Schedule: Schoolyear field trips, weeklong summer camps, and after school programs, including a 6 week afterschool program called “Fireworks” in spring
The current program is divided into schoolyear field trips for elementary school children from Mono and Inyo Counties, as well as weeklong summer camps and after school programs. A 6 week afterschool program called “Fireworks” is offered in spring and focuses on Fire Ecology, and it takes place on Mondays from March to April. Activities for different grade levels focus on nature-based knowledge and awareness through the lenses of art, traditional ecological knowledge, and exploration, and virtual programs can be accessed from anywhere.
Outdoor Science Education Programs state that they aim to deepen public understanding and appreciation of the Eastern Sierra and foster continued environmental stewardship of this ecologically and economically important region. The Sierra Nevada Aquatic Research Laboratory (SNARL), where the program is based, was established in 1935 by the US Bureau of Sport Fisheries and Wildlife as the Convict Creek Experiment Station, and its facilities were transferred to the University of California, Santa Barbara in 1973. The leadership team includes Dr. Conner Philson, Executive Director; Laurie Cussalli, Management Services Officer; and Sarah Sikich, Senior Director of Development.
