About
Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation Ocean Therapy includes surfing, therapist-led group talk discussions, therapist-led group discussion sessions, and other ocean-related activities. The program uses a model that combines therapist-led group discussion sessions with surfing and other ocean-related activities as part of its Ocean Therapy approach. It is described as a world-leading therapeutic surf program and a unique outdoor recreational therapy protocol called Ocean Therapy.
• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Price: All of our Ocean Therapy sessions are offered free of charge to our participants.
The Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation states that its mission is to help as many people suffering from mental and physical illness as its resources will allow. JMMF is recognized as the world leader in the developing field of Ocean/Surf Therapy and as the world leader in using Ocean Therapy to help those suffering from mental and physical illness, injury, and disabilities. The organization reports having the largest staff of trained surf therapists, and the largest staff of trained ocean/surf therapists, in the world. JMMF therapists and clinicians wrote the Ocean/Surf Therapy manual that has been adopted by most organizations offering surf therapy today, and the program pioneered the development of Ocean/Surf Therapy under the early direction of Dr. Carly Rogers. The leadership team includes JMMF’s CEO Andy Dellenbach, early direction from Dr. Carly Rogers during her Masters and Doctorate programs, and a Board of Directors and Advisory Board.
The foundation is a founding member of ISTO (International Surf Therapy Organization). Community involvement includes JMMF clubs at local high schools and support from service clubs such as Amigos Unidos, National Charity League, and Sandpipers. The organization participates in the Catalina Classic Paddleboard Race and the Beachlife Philanthropy Gala. Partnerships include military groups (such as Marines from JMMF’s Ocean Therapy program at Camp Pendleton, active-duty military, and veterans), at-promise youth, healthcare workers, first responders, victims and survivors, people with special needs, and neurodivergent populations.
Shared testimonials describe individual experiences from a Marine in the Wounded Warrior Battalion West (WWBW), an at-promise participant in foster care, a TMMC healthcare worker, and a veteran from Jessup University, each reflecting on their personal experiences with surfing and Ocean Therapy through the program. The years leading up to the foundation include the Miller family moving to Manhattan Beach in 1976, Jimmy Miller graduating from Mira Costa High School in 1987, earning a BA from the University of California at Berkeley in 1991, forming his surf instruction company Pure Surfing Experience in 1998 (which became Camp Surf), serving as a L.A. County Lifeguard for fifteen years, and his passing in August 2004, after which the Miller family created the foundation in his honor.
