Steve & Kate’s Camp was founded in 1980 and follows a self-directed philosophy in which campers choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long. The program states that all year long kids are in rigid structure, and that in summer it gives them freedom to expand and evolve, describing camp as a training ground for life where they are empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions.

At this camp location in Summer 2025, there is a Mentorship Program for ages 14–15, where mentees help facilitate camp activities, engage with campers, and encourage camper connection and participation. Families can buy any number of day passes, attend camp on any day within the season, drop off and pick up at any time during camp hours, and receive automatic full refunds for unused Day Passes and partial refunds for underused Summer Passes. The program includes long camp hours, as well as meals and snacks.

The camp’s leadership at this site includes Director Rachel. The mission and approach have been covered in outlets such as Apple’s Hot News, Variety, The Washington Post, and the Chicago Tribune, and filmmaker Andrew Stanton has provided a testimonial about children’s experiences at Steve & Kate’s Camp.
