All instructors are CPR and First-Aid Certified, and surf instructors are described as experienced surfers and watermen. Chris Brown is the Executive Director of Campsurf, President of the California Beach Volleyball Association (CBVA), and sits on the Nominating and Governance Committee of USA Volleyball. The leadership team also includes founder Jim Miller, and Tommy Ostendorf, Mark Gerold, and Chris Brown, who took over Campsurf operations after Jimmy Miller’s passing.

Campsurf has been contracted to run the City of Manhattan Beach Department of Parks and Recreation surf classes since 1997 and is the official surf school of the cities of Manhattan Beach and Hermosa Beach. Campsurf has been voted “Best Kids Camp” by the local community three years in a row in 2017, 2018, and 2019. Campsurf formed a partnership with surf company Body Glove in 2012, which provides Campsurf and its clients with wetsuits and surfboards. Campsurf has been featured on ESPN, Fit TV, K-CAL Channel 9, the nationally broadcasted CBS Morning Show, HD Net’s “Get Out!” and the nationally syndicated TV show “The Doctors.”

The program’s stated vision is to offer residents and visitors to the Los Angeles and Manhattan Beach areas a complete and pure surfing experience through proven teaching techniques with experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly local surf instructors and lifeguards. Its stated goal is to make surfing accessible, fun, and safe for people of all ages with the desire to ride waves. The Jimmy Miller Memorial Foundation, connected to Campsurf’s history, is dedicated to helping others learn to love, heal, and feel joy from the power of the ocean and the power of loving friends.

Parent and participant feedback includes comments that Campsurf’s surf camp is a highlight of a summer term, that instructors such as Josh, Stokes, Kyle, and Chris are described as patient, informative, and focused on safety elements and lesson goals, and that children and teens have had memorable experiences getting up on their boards and returning to surfing after previous fearful experiences.
