About
GeoKids Early Childhood Development Center is a nationally-recognized, NAEYC-accredited cooperative childcare center and preschool. The program uses an emergent, play-based curriculum and focuses on social-emotional problem solving. Its positive discipline approach focuses on life skills and “strong hearts,” and its philosophy is influenced by child care centers in Reggio Emilia, Italy and by Magda Gerber, Maria Montessori, Lev Vygotsky, and Loris Malaguzzi.

GeoKids was founded in 1987 by a group of parents who worked at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) campus. Many of the educators have a bachelor’s degree in child development or a related field, and all GeoKids educators are certified in CPR/first aid. GeoKids is a parent cooperative where parents spend time in the classroom every week and participate in community events, and it fosters a community of partnership where parents, teachers, and children all learn together. GeoKids is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and is described as a nationally-recognized, NAEYC-accredited cooperative childcare center and preschool. One child described the program by saying, “In rainbows, all the colors are next to each other, and there’s not just one color in the rainbow. And at GeoKids, there is not just one kind of kid.” At GeoKids, the stated mission is that children are competent and capable, and deserving of dignity and respect, and the environment and curriculum reflect values of community, interconnectedness and care, empowerment, joy, and multiple perspectives, with a goal of a lifelong commitment to joyful inquiry, courageous compassion, and thoughtful participation.
