About
GeoKids Early Childhood Development Center is a nationally-recognized, NAEYC-accredited cooperative childcare center and preschool. The program uses an emergent, play-based curriculum with a focus on social-emotional problem solving and a positive discipline approach that focuses on life skills and “strong hearts.”
• Ages: 0–5 years old
• Schedule: Open Monday–Friday, 8am–6pm, year round
GeoKids was founded in 1987 as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and a parent cooperative, with parents spending time in the classroom every week and taking part in community events. Many of the educators have a bachelor’s degree in child development or a related field, and all GeoKids educators are certified in CPR and first aid. The program was founded by a group of parents who worked at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and the Stanford Research Institute (SRI) campus, and it is influenced by child care centers in Reggio Emilia, Italy and by the work of Magda Gerber, Maria Montessori, Lev Vygotsky, and Loris Malaguzzi. The mission of GeoKids states that children are competent and capable, and deserving of dignity and respect, and that its environment and curriculum reflect values of community, interconnectedness and care, empowerment, joy, and multiple perspectives, with a goal of lifelong commitment to joyful inquiry, courageous compassion, and thoughtful participation. One child described the community by saying, “In rainbows, all the colors are next to each other, and there’s not just one color in the rainbow. And at GeoKids, there is not just one kind of kid.”
