Write With Janet

Write With Janet offers writing classes in small group lessons, private lessons, semi-private lessons, summer writing classes, and writing workshops. The program also offers teacher training workshops in literacy, educational consulting services for students who are struggling, and guidance through the public school assessment process.

• Schedule: Summer Classes June 22 – August 7, in three, two-week sessions

Write With Janet is led by Janet Rose, a former Palo Alto Unified teacher and literacy lead teacher in the Palo Alto Unified School District (PAUSD). She has conducted teacher training workshops in literacy both in and outside Palo Alto, is trained in the Reading and Writing Project through Teachers College at Columbia University, and has been a teacher for 42 years, 34 of them in Palo Alto. She retired from teaching second grade at Palo Verde School, has an MA in Early Childhood Education, and has worked with students in grades Pre-K through 8th grade. The program includes small group classes of 4–6 students, and most summer students are described as struggling or average writers, with an additional multi-age group of highly motivated writers each summer. Write With Janet also notes, “It’s like school – with dogs!” and states that Janet is a Child Advocate who can help families whose children might be struggling in school.

Families are asked to make payment for classes via Zelle or by dropping off a check once a spot is confirmed, and to include their email and student name in the Zelle comments. The program invites families to check out Write With Janet on Yelp and Google Maps and includes a student comment: “Everyone is a good writer. You just have to find it!” – Milan, 5th grade (in the middle of his first lesson).
