About
Julie Foudy Soccer Camps offers soccer training that includes exercises, drills, small-sided games, and a Julie Foudy World Cup event. The program also offers a leadership curriculum emphasizing mental health, leadership, and resilience, with age-appropriate leadership activities focused on athlete mental health, team building, and resilience in the afternoons. Campers take part in Q & A sessions for the entire camp (and parents) and organized autograph sessions, along with autograph and photo opportunities with staff.
• Ages: 7–18 years old
• Schedule: Monday, June 22 – Thursday, June 25, with half-day soccer camp from 9:00 a.m.–Noon and full-day soccer and leadership camp from 9:00 a.m.–3:00 p.m. (ending at noon on the last day)
• Price: Half Day Soccer Camp: $250; Full Day Soccer & Leadership Camp: $450
During June 22–25, soccer training runs from 9:00 a.m.–Noon, with full-day campers staying for lunch from Noon–1:00 p.m., followed by leadership and soccer from 1:00–3:00 p.m. (ending at noon on the last day). The full-day schedule is based on soccer development in the morning and leadership development in the afternoon, and the camp is described as a Soccer & Leadership Day Camp for girls ages 7–18. The program uses reformulated exercises, drills, and small-sided games used by the US Women’s National Team, top collegiate programs, and women’s professional teams, and it is described as being designed for mixed-ability students and addressing elite, club/high school, and recreational players with specific leadership and development focuses.
Some staff members have played at the highest level in women’s soccer, and National Team players, professional players, and top collegiate players participate in Q & A sessions. Julie Foudy was the former USA Women’s Soccer Team Captain, a two-time Olympic Gold Medalist, and a two-time World Cup Champion, and she launched The Julie Foudy Sports Leadership Academy in the summer of 2006 along with her husband, Ian Sawyers, former head coach of the WUSA San Jose Cyberrays and the 2001 WUSA coach of the year, and their friends Kerri McClellan, Edson McClellan, and Todd Smith. JFSC is celebrating 31 years, and soccer training from 9:00 a.m.–Noon has been done for 26 years.
The stated philosophy is to bring out not only the best player, but also the best leader, in each athlete, and Julie Foudy says, “Sports gave me my voice.” The program states that it wants student-athletes to experience the confidence sports can offer and the fun that should be inherent in all activities. One testimonial from Julie Foudy states that she wanted to enable young players to have fun with the same exercises, drills, and small-sided games used by the US Women’s National Team, top collegiate programs, and women’s professional teams, reformulated for young athletes, and that she wants to pass on to athletes her passion for the concept of being a leader on a team and a leader in life.
Campers receive a Nike camp t-shirt, a Nike soccer ball, and a complimentary JFSC group photo, and there is a Julie Foudy World Cup event with World Cup medals for newly crowned world champions. The camp includes a highly popular Q & A session for the entire camp (and parents), and autograph sessions are organized so no camper misses an opportunity. Many camp photos were provided by Mike Bray and Karen Osato Wells, and many USWNT photos were provided by Sideline Sports Photography, LLC.
All campers are instructed to bring a refillable water jug, soccer cleats, shinguards, and sunblock. Full-day campers are instructed to bring lunch and sneakers, and flip flops or slides are not allowed during afternoon programming.
