About
Mission Viejo Nadadores offers a swim school, a pre-competitive league, a competitive league, masters swim, and a dive division that includes a diving program. The program includes more than 1,400 members across these swim and dive activities.
Mission Viejo Nadadores originated in 1968, applied for membership in the AAU in 1969, and by 1970 had grown to 120 swim members. By 1973, the Nadadores Swim Division became a senior and national competitive program, and in 1978 Dr. Ron O’Brien became Head Dive Coach. The program states a mission of providing an inclusive, diverse, safe environment for athletes to develop to their highest competitive success while learning life skills through professionally organized programming and events and providing opportunities to become active community leaders. Its vision is described as developing champions in the water and leaders in life.
The leadership team includes Head Coach Mark Schubert, Coach Bill Rose, and Coach Jeff Julian for the Swim Division, and Head Dive Coach Dr. Ron O’Brien for the Dive Division. Over the years, the swim division has earned more than 47 National Team Titles, produced 151 National Individual Champions, set 95 American Records and 26 World Records, and produced 106 Olympians who won 113 Olympic Medals. The dive division has earned 51 National Team Titles, produced 198 National Individual Champions, and 19 Olympians who won 11 Olympic Medals. The program has been a consistent member of USA Swimming’s Gold Medal Club, has been named one of ASCA’s Top 50 club programs, and is a USMS Masters Gold Medal club, and the diving program is an affiliate of USA Diving. The team has consistently placed athletes at every Olympic Games since 1976 and describes itself as a premier diving team in the United States under Head Dive Coach Dr. Ron O’Brien.
Mission Viejo Nadadores has hosted competitions that include international and national Olympic and elite-level athletes, such as the Los Angeles Invitational, Swim Meet of Champions, USMS National Championships, TYR Pro Swim Series, FINA Grand Prix, TYR Junior America’s Cup, Chris Vonk Diving Invitational, and the Dr. Ron O’Brien Diving Invitational. Parent testimonials describe experiences in both the swim and dive programs, including one family noting that the program built a strong foundation and inspired their swimmer to aim high, another family describing their diver’s progress from a novice program at age seven to a five-time Junior Nationals finalist, and another family calling joining MVN a life-changing experience and emphasizing the team’s focus on character, mutual respect, community, and personal growth.
