Joe Ferrante Music Academy was founded in 2003 as a private music training program and made its commercial debut on Colorado Boulevard in Old Town Monrovia in July 2004. The academy states it has been Monrovia’s trusted music academy for 20–21 years, with a proven track record of excellence since 2004 and over twenty years of teaching thousands of musicians of all ages. It describes itself as a distinguished music school committed to West Covina, California, and adjacent communities.
Instructors at the academy come from institutions such as USC, UCLA, Berklee College of Music, and NYU, and all teachers have university training in their discipline and/or professional experience as performers. The majority of degreed teachers are professional performers who often compose their own music, and faculty have won competitions and awards and perform locally and internationally. Lessons are taught under the oversight and philosophy of founder Joe Ferrante, a USC graduate in Music Theory & Composition with an emphasis in Scoring for Motion Pictures and Television, who has studied concert piano in New York and France, including with Jeaneane Dowis-Lipman, formerly of the Juilliard School, and at Mannes College of Music in Manhattan. Joe Ferrante has composed, conducted, and recorded seven original film score compositions for professional symphony orchestra at Paramount Pictures and is working on his second solo album of original compositions. The leadership team includes Joe Ferrante as Founder & President, Summer Garcia as Director, and Mario Ferrante as Director Emeritus.
The academy states that its mission is to deliver quality music classes and to focus on professional music tutoring, individual instruction, and group classes for all ages and skill sets, with a commitment to both excellence and creativity. It describes itself as a community where students gain confidence, discipline, and joy through music, with personalized instruction, performance opportunities, and encouragement from passionate teachers. The academy describes itself as a home for the modern musician and notes that students can learn from professional performers who often compose their own music.
Joe Ferrante Music Academy offers flexible learning options including private lessons, group classes, and online lessons, and notes that it is one of the only schools in the San Gabriel Valley to offer lessons seven days a week. It offers morning and lunchtime lessons for homeschoolers, retirees, college students, and working professionals, and states that siblings can study different instruments at the same time or students can take multiple lessons back-to-back. The academy is family owned and operated and offers free tours of the facility.
The academy describes its facility as a world-class space with multiple teaching rooms, a spacious lounge and lobby with comfortable seating, free high-speed Wi‑Fi, large windows, and French doors on every teaching room. Every lesson room is described as fully stocked, comfortable, with natural light, painted and decorated with art, and equipped with electronic drum sets, amplifiers, other instruments, and acoustic pianos. The academy states that the first lesson includes a quality instrument for each student for most instruments, and that once a student decides to continue, instruments can be rented for as low as $35 per month. It notes that students may study in-person in teaching studios or virtually from home, and that all a student needs to bring is their instrument because rooms are fully stocked with necessary equipment.
The academy highlights world-class recitals with themes such as Red Carpet, Christmas, Mardi Gras, Chocolate, Dress-up Halloween, and Glow-in-the-dark. Recitals often include a photographer, videographer, live-streaming, and a reception, and students can participate in awards recitals but are not required to perform. The academy uses a Musical Ladder program with trophies, certificates, and award wristbands to chart and celebrate achievements, and it offers performance opportunities and regular recitals and showcases.
Joe Ferrante Music Academy states that it works with many charter school organizations as well as the Monrovia School District to support access to music education. It describes itself as having a notable standing in music instruction, known for quality education, expert faculty, and a learner-focused model.
The academy notes that it has professional office staff and a full-time Director onsite, with additional office staff available seven days a week by phone, email, or text. It also states that it offers everything from piano to recording technology under one roof and that it provides convenience for families through its scheduling and range of subjects.
Parent and student testimonials describe children growing into strong, confident musicians, enjoyment of piano and guitar lessons, and positive experiences with teachers and front desk staff. Reviews mention online Zoom lessons working well, including for guitar, songwriting, Mandarin, piano, and a music application type class for a preschool-age child, and describe the spring performance as amazing with a wonderful experience with a vocal coach. Other testimonials note professional staff, accommodating scheduling, and long-term attendance of more than 30 lessons, as well as specific thanks to instructors for helping with confidence in singing and vocal range.
