About
Monrovia Youth Baseball League offers organized youth baseball that follows PONY Baseball rules and structure. Players take part in age-based divisions that include activities such as base stealing, with lead offs and base stealing starting at age 9 in the Mustang Division or earlier. Pitchers in the league learn pick off moves and how to hold runners on base.
• Ages: 5–14 years old
Monrovia Youth Baseball League has served young athletes and their families since 1956. Its stated mission is to provide every child, regardless of skill level, experience, or financial circumstances, with the opportunity to participate in organized youth baseball in a safe, inclusive, and positive environment focused on fundamental skills and the values of teamwork, respect, sportsmanship, and perseverance. The league is an affiliate of PONY Baseball (Protect Our Nation’s Youth) and is a registered non-profit organization.
As a PONY affiliate, the league uses a two-year age bracket system with scaled diamonds and plays by Major League rules without mixing softball and MLB rules. PONY’s structure in the league includes base and pitching dimensions scaled by age division: 50 ft bases for Shetland 5–6 year olds; 60 ft bases and 38 ft pitching for Pinto 7–8 year olds; 65 ft bases and 44 ft pitching for Mustang 9–10 year olds; 70 ft bases and 48 ft pitching for Bronco 11–12 year olds; and 80 ft bases and 54 ft pitching for Pony 13–14 year olds. These scaled diamonds allow players to make plays made by major leaguers, including home runs, double plays, squeeze plays, and various strategies and tactics.
Within this structure, PONY teaches lead offs and base stealing starting at age 9 in the Mustang Division, or earlier, and the league teaches pitching, leading off, and base stealing sooner than programs that delay those skills. Compared to Little League, PONY League features in Monrovia Youth Baseball League include two-year age groups, scaled age-appropriate diamonds and pitching distances, competitive baseball starting at age 7, not limiting 5–6 year olds to T-ball, not limiting 7–8 year olds to coach or machine pitch, a maximum of one inning sitting out per game for 7–8 year olds, no drafting up or down during the season, and preparation for high school baseball. Monrovia Youth Baseball League serves hundreds of young athletes and their families throughout Monrovia, California, and the surrounding communities of the San Gabriel Valley, and it is recognized by MUSD and has been congratulated by the City of Monrovia.
