Serendipity Preschool offers daily activities that include Music, Arts & Crafts, Computers, The Boehm Basic Concepts (Concept Understanding Program - C.U.P.), Cooking & Baking, journals, Macmillian’s Whole Language Big Book Program, and “The Living Institute Of Social Skills” “Let’s Talk About” series. The program also uses the A.I.M.S. Instructional Manipulative Series in pre-reading, consonants, vowels, comprehension, and math, and organizes curriculum into monthly theme-based units that include music, creative arts, science, history, social skills, literature, culinary arts, language, motor skills, and mathematics. Children make monthly entries in journals that focus on themes or special events, and pre-kindergarten classes participate one week per month in the Big Book Program.

The program’s philosophy is “to open the eyes and hearts of children to the wonder and discovery of learning,” and it includes the quote, “LEARNING SHOULD BE A JOY AND FULL OF EXCITEMENT. IT IS LIFE’S GREATEST ADVENTURE” – Taylor Caldwell. Serendipity has a year-round program in which the school year begins the first week in August and ends in mid July, and the summer camp runs the first two weeks in July. Fun American traditions are celebrated, including a Halloween Party (no scary costumes), Thanksgiving Feast, Holiday Pageant, Valentine’s Day Party, an “End of The Year Celebration,” and a “Graduation Ceremony” for pre-kindergarten students.
Teachers at Serendipity are described as skilled, enthusiastic, and highly qualified, and the staff is college trained in early child development and early childhood education. Each teacher’s formal education, work-related and personal references are checked, a full criminal background check is performed, and teachers are required to maintain a current American Red Cross card in pediatric CPR and First Aid. Class sizes include one teacher to approximately six students. Each child is issued a personal assessment file that records daily progress in all areas of the curriculum, and a Social Emotional Assessment is completed twice a year by teachers.
The Boehm Basic Concepts program focuses on the vocabulary of directions, and the A.I.M.S. program uses Learning Folders and Manipulative Cards in an informal learning situation for reading and mathematics. Individualized instruction on computers uses a variety of educational software that includes all areas of the curriculum and fundamental concepts of computer programming. Cooking & Baking projects reinforce proper hygiene and integrate lessons in measuring, sizing, number quantities, fractions, and estimating. Music is an important daily part of the curriculum and is used to develop attentive listening and large and small motor skills, and art is offered daily with theme-oriented projects using a wide range of materials.
Children make monthly journal entries that are compiled and sent home at the end of enrollment. A monthly newsletter highlights themes, letters, children’s literature, and special events of the month. Weekly “Activity Cards” are sent home describing the child’s daily educational activities and assessments. Ongoing dialogue between parents and teachers takes place at drop off and pick up times, and parent/teacher conferences are scheduled throughout the school year at the parent’s request or when a teacher feels it is beneficial. Calendars for the school year are issued each August to inform parents of school breaks, observed holidays, and special school events.
Serendipity Preschool is open to all children, regardless of race, nationality or creed, and students are admitted without regard to race, color, religion, nationality or ethnic origin. The child must be at least three years of age, toilet trained, and must not be over kindergarten age. The program offers a variety of sessions and a 2, 3, 4, or 5 days per week schedule. Priority enrollment for the following school year is given to currently enrolled students, and the majority of openings occur at the beginning of the school year, with new students accepted throughout the year if spaces become available. Serendipity schedules private tours at 8:00am, Monday through Friday.
