About

California Academy of Performing Arts offers instruction in dance, performing, and theatre. The program includes a free trial class and has trained thousands of dancers in the art of dance and performing. CAPA also provides an app that families can use to access schedules, email the office, register for classes, and update payment information.

• Schedule: Office and store hours during the school year are Monday–Friday, 3:30 pm–6:00 pm, and during summer are Monday–Thursday, 1:00 pm–5:00 pm.

Founded in 1981, California Academy of Performing Arts has been teaching the art of dance and performing and working with young people for more than 44 years. The program grew from 110 students in the first session to over 400 students and more than 1,800 student hours weekly. Its mission is “to teach the art of dance and theatre in a professional manner, by enriching our students with lifelong skills that can benefit them in whatever path they take.” CAPA’s staff includes professionals whose experience goes beyond the studio, stage, and university classroom, including performing and/or choreographing for professional companies around the world, plus theater, movies, television, and videos. The leadership team includes founder Joan Robinson, Ronn Guidi (who assisted in founding and is Director of the Oakland Ballet Company), President/CEO and co-owner Doyle Borchers, Joan’s late husband Peter Robinson, and Cathy Demos as the contact for urgent matters. CAPA notes that many alumni are still working professionally and some have joined the staff, and that its dancers have performed all over the world and throughout the USA. CAPA states that it provides a safe and nurturing environment with emphasis on process over product, and that dance mates often become lifelong friends, much like family. The program is located in the “Lamorinda” area and provides local children access to professional training, and CAPA students have joined top professional dance companies in the US and abroad, as well as on the Broadway stage and on television and commercials. Families are asked to register a current email address for communication and to add [email protected] to their email address book.
