About
California Academy of Performing Arts offers instruction in dance, performing, and theatre. The program includes opportunities for students to take part in these performing arts under the guidance of experienced staff.
• Schedule: Office and store hours during the school year are Monday–Friday from 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm, and during the summer are Monday–Thursday from 1:00 pm to 5:00 pm.
California Academy of Performing Arts has four dance studios, identified as Studios A, B, C, and D. The program has been teaching the art of dance and performing in Moraga since 1981 and has trained thousands of dancers over more than 44 years. Its dancers have performed all over the world and throughout the USA, and many alumni are still working professionally, with some returning to join the staff. CAPA’s staff includes Bay Area professionals whose experience goes beyond the studio, stage, and university classroom, including performing and choreographing for professional companies around the world, as well as work in theater, movies, television, and videos. The organization states that its mission is “to teach the art of dance and theatre in a professional manner, by enriching our students with lifelong skills that can benefit them in whatever path they take.” CAPA notes that it emphasizes teaching life skills through art by creating a safe and nurturing environment, with emphasis on process over product, and that each student is considered unique and equally important, with dance progress not always following a rigid timeline.
The leadership team includes founder Joan Robinson, with assistance in founding from Ronn Guidi, Director of the Oakland Ballet Company. CAPA’s President/CEO and co-owner is Doyle Borchers, and Doyle and Joan operate CAPA. Cathy Demos is listed as the contact for urgent matters. CAPA also notes that it has one of the finest dance teaching staffs in California. The program offers a free trial class and uses an app that allows families to access a dancer’s schedule, send an email to the office, register for classes, and update payment information from a phone. CAPA communicates entirely by email or through its website and does not send individual bills and notices.
