Founded in 1969 as part of Novato’s city recreation program, the Novato Lacrosse Club is the oldest lacrosse club in California. The club was founded with the mission to provide the community's youth an exceptional lacrosse experience including life-long lessons of sportsmanship, teamwork, and leadership while encouraging the love of the sport. The club draws players, coaches, and volunteers from a diverse community and is run by a team of volunteers as a non-profit program. Over 250 girls and boys play across 15 teams, and the program has a commitment to accommodating as many recreational players as possible while also providing world-class competitive opportunities for advanced players. In the 1970s and 1980s, the boys varsity program won ten consecutive Northern California Club Championships and five consecutive State Club Championships from 1975 to 1985, and today the club is recognized around Northern California as a premier lacrosse club. The Novato Unified School District voted to approve varsity lacrosse as a CIF sport as part of a two-year pilot program at Novato High School and San Marin High School, and in 2004 the district extended this pilot program for varsity level lacrosse at both high schools. Coaches and volunteer staff are dedicated to reinforcing commitment to sportsmanship, teamwork, and fun, and teams are recognized for their skill, love of the game, and high level of sportsmanship.
