About

Learn to Bike Camp Oakland is a half-day Learn to Bike day camp where kids spend the week practicing biking skills. Campers work through a time-tested method that includes walking their bikes, scooting downhill, coasting with their feet up, touching the pedals, and pedaling. The camp is intended for first-time riders or kids using training wheels or balance bikes, not those who can already ride, and campers must be toilet trained by the start of camp.

• Ages: 3–6 years old
• Schedule: One-week sessions, Monday–Friday, 8:30–11:30 a.m. (total camp hours 15)
• Price: AM Session Price $460; Early Drop Off starting at 8 a.m. $40

Campers are strongly encouraged to use their own bikes, but they may also borrow from the camp’s fleet, which includes top-of-the-line gear specifically sized for kids. The program has camper-to-staff ratios of 5:1 and offers transportation to and from recreation areas. Instructors are described as skilled, patient, incredibly well-trained and professional staff, and all Avid4 instructors are 18 and older with impeccable credentials and serious safety and skills training. The camp is backed by the Avid4 Adventure Guarantee, which offers the next camp free if promises are not met.

Avid4 Adventure states that its mission is to use the transformative power of the outdoors so that kids build confidence, make new friends, and master essential skills in activities like paddling, biking, rock climbing, and hiking. The organization’s leadership includes founder David Secunda, a former president of the Outdoor Industry Association and a 25-year veteran of the outdoor education industry. Avid4 Adventure is a Certified B Corp, its summer camps are accredited by the American Camp Association, and it has been named among Colorado Parent’s Top 5 Sports Camps. Avid4 Adventure operates under a Special Use authorization from the National Forest Service and is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

One parent reported that their daughter arrived biking with training wheels and, during camp, learned how to ride without training wheels, later becoming fully able to ride her bike after two more park trips. Another parent described Avid’s staff as mature, responsible, and excited to share their passion with children, and said their child wanted them to come see everything she had learned and done each day. A third parent said their kids had “the best time” at camp, were active every day, and continued talking about camp more than a month later.
