About
Oakland Youth Tennis Programs offers tennis through after-school classes, spring camps, summer camps, and USTA tournaments. The program also includes adult private lessons, adult group lessons, and a tennis exhibition as part of its activities.
• Schedule: Davie Stadium is open year-round with hours on Monday and Friday from 9 AM to 8 PM, Tuesday through Thursday from 9 AM to 9 PM, and weekends from 8:30 AM to 5 PM.
Davie Tennis Stadium has 5 well-maintained courts that are open to the public, and reservations are recommended but not required. The program’s leadership includes Marc Weinstein, described as a long-time Oakland Director of Tennis. The staff is described as patient, dedicated, professional, and committed to tennis, and Steve Cornell, a Davie regular, is a Northern California Tennis Hall of Fame Inductee.
The stadium is situated on the site of the former Piedmont Paving Company quarry and was given to the City of Oakland in 1931 by former mayor John L. Davie and his family, after he announced the stadium project idea in 1921. The mission at Davie Tennis Stadium is to provide a wide variety of tennis programs for various ages, skills, and interests, with a focus on helping players set and achieve new goals.
The Marc Weinstein Tennis Legacy Foundation has been announced to honor the life and legacy of Marc Weinstein. Its kickoff event, RALLY ON!, is scheduled at Bushrod Park on Shattuck Avenue between 59th and 60th Streets in Oakland on Sunday, October 1, 2023, from 2:00–4:00(ish), with a brief program and tennis exhibition by some of Marc’s students around 3:00, and attendees are asked to bring a racquet and be ready for tennis and non-tennis games and fun.
Testimonials from regular participants describe Davie as a place that visitors remember, and one retired OUSD principal and Davie regular states that a private tennis club could not offer more than what is already available at Davie Tennis Stadium.
