Founded by Black and Queer dance and martial artists in 1988, Destiny Arts Center has over 30 years of work in Oakland as an anchor cultural institution. Its movement arts programs are rooted in Destiny’s creative youth development framework and the “Warriors Code” of Love, Care, Respect, Honor, Responsibility, and Peace. The organization is committed to centering the voices and experiences of BIPOC youth and uses movement-based arts to uplift youth voice, supporting pathways for young people to express themselves, advocate for justice and equity, fight against systemic racism, and build a community where everyone feels seen, valued, and free. The program equally values mastery of movement arts, inclusive communities, and cultivating advocates for peace, and provides a brave space for youth to express themselves, advocate for social change, and build thriving communities. A Destiny Arts Center caregiver describes Destiny Arts as “the heartbeat of the community.”
