About

Oakland Devo is a middle school adventure mountain biking club where kids do mountain biking, adventure rides, and Fun Rides. Riders go on three- to four-hour rides on weekends and also ride on weekdays in the spring. The team is made up of middle school girls and boys who ride for fun, not competition, and they ride bikes and explore the outdoors in the East Bay and beyond.

• Ages: 11–14 years old
• Schedule: Three- to four-hour rides on weekends, with additional rides on weekdays in the spring

The club was started in 2016 by Morgan Fletcher, of Oakland Composite fame. Oakland Devo states that “Devo” stands for Development. The mission of Oakland Devo is to get more kids on bikes, with a focus on mountain biking because it is described as safe and fun, and to give kids a chance to get outside, get exercise, explore, and learn about the natural world around them. The program states that it wants all kids to have the chance to experience this sport regardless of income and that, as much as possible, it strives to make that happen, including helping kids who do not usually participate in sports try an activity that might fit them. Oakland Devo states that it thinks screens are okay but prefers offering a fun alternative to staring at a phone, and that it wants to teach all kids the basic physical skill of riding a bike for safety, fun, and confidence. The mission also includes helping teach life lessons by coaching kids to ride mountain bikes, fostering strong minds, bodies, and character, and aiming to produce lifetime riders, with an overall mission “to have fun on bikes.”

Oakland Devo notes that there is a strong and growing mountain bike culture within Oakland’s youth, and that competitive high school teams such as Oakland Composite, Oakland Tech, Skyline High, Piedmont High, and Bishop O’Dowd include many riders who previously rode with Oakland Devo. If a child needs a loaner bike or gear, or wants to apply for the Pathfinders Scholarship, Oakland Devo states that it will help every rider get out on the trails and that “everyone deserves to ride.” New registration for the 2026 season is now closed, and all rides are scheduled for registered members on TeamSnap. For families interested in the 2026 season, Oakland Devo states that it will start Registration and Fun Rides in the fall and that people can sign up for the mailing list to receive updates and notifications when they launch. The program information is listed with a copyright of 2024 Oakland Devo, Oakland, California.
