About
GirlVentures Summer Programs include kayak tours, paddling on Tomales Bay, multi-day backpacking expeditions, and sea kayaking expeditions. In Project Courage, students carry everything they need in kayaks, and all gear, food, and transportation are provided. No prior experience is necessary to participate, and the program provides free, high-quality clothing, equipment, and food to each participant.
• Ages: 12–14 years old
• Schedule: Monday–Friday, 9am to 5pm, with Project Courage offered as a 10-day, 9-night expedition
• Price: The true cost per youth to participate in a summer expedition is $5000/youth. Program Cost: A range of sliding scale options is offered, with fees based on household income and payable in 1 or 3 monthly installments. Fee waivers are available on a limited basis.
Project Courage is for girls and gender non-conforming youth entering 7th and 8th grade, and GirlVentures serves gender expansive youth, including cis girls, trans youth, non-binary youth, gender non-conforming youth, gender queer youth, and any girl-identified youth. The instructors are paid, WFR certified professional youth workers and educators. The leadership team includes Keri Butkevich, MA, CFRE as Executive Director, Tryka Orbin D Tryka as Program Director, and Erin Teutschel as Program Manager/GCO Coordinator.
GirlVentures states that its programs catalyze positive personal change and that they explore identity, social justice, leadership, health, and the environment while nurturing girls’ self-esteem and resilience as they develop into empathetic, confident conservationists and allies. As a nonprofit organization, GirlVentures is dedicated to providing equitable access to outdoor education, practices radical inclusion, and adopts organizational practices that promote inclusion, cultural humility, and more equitable distribution of resources. The organization subsidizes the cost of course tuition for all participants, and all program fees are partially subsidized by supporters. One participant, Sara, describes GirlVentures as “a community that teaches girls to be who they want to be, and to have the courage to do whatever they set their minds to do.”
