About

Reading Partners offers one-on-one literacy tutoring through in-person, online, and virtual sessions. The program provides high-dosage tutoring supported by volunteer tutors who are trained to use an evidence-based curriculum rooted in the science of reading. Students receive twice weekly tutoring through a direct tutoring program and customizable program offerings powered by Reading Partners.

Reading Partners’ research-backed literacy programs use collaborative, community-driven solutions based in the science of reading. The organization has delivered more than 3 million direct tutoring sessions over 25 years. Reading Partners works with under-resourced schools in geographic centers around the country and partners with individuals, companies, and organizations that care about early education in their community. AmeriCorps members are at the heart of Reading Partners, which has been a partner of AmeriCorps for nearly 15 years. The Powered by Reading Partners model provides community partners with engaging, high-quality educational materials and extensive training.

Students’ reading skills are assessed three times during the year, and multiple data sources are used to monitor student progress and site quality. Teachers are formally surveyed twice each year, and volunteer tutors write observational notes after each tutoring session. Independent, gold-standard research finalized in 2015 by MDRC, using a randomized control trial, found that Reading Partners has a positive and statistically significant impact on reading comprehension, sight-word reading, and reading fluency. Reading Partners is highlighted as one of five effective one-on-one literacy tutoring programs in a June 2017 report by Research for Action for the William Penn Foundation. Reading Partners has a strong ESSA rating from Evidence for ESSA and is a Library of Congress Best Practice Honoree. CEO Adeola Whitney leads the organization and has been named one of the top 100 influencers in EdTech.

One fourth-grade student shared, “Mr. Matt is one of the reasons why I like reading now. I appreciate him because he took the time out of his life just to be with me and help me learn.” A tutor described the experience by saying, “It’s a life changing experience when you help a child learn to read.”
