About

Reading Partners offers one-on-one, high-dosage tutoring through in-person, online, virtual, and other direct tutoring sessions. The program also includes Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons as part of its literacy support.

• Schedule: Students receive twice weekly tutoring for maximum growth

Over 25 years, Reading Partners has delivered more than 3 million direct tutoring sessions. The organization’s research-backed literacy programs are based in the science of reading and include both direct tutoring and customized program offerings. Reading Partners uses multiple data sources to monitor student progress and site quality, including assessment of student reading skills three times during the year, formal teacher surveys twice each year, and observational notes written by volunteer tutors after each tutoring session. The Powered by Reading Partners model provides community partners with educational materials and training.

Reading Partners’ mission statement is: “Reading Partners’ research-backed literacy programs offer collaborative, community-driven solutions based in the science of reading to ensure students receive the quality education they deserve.” The CEO of Reading Partners is Adeola Whitney. Reading Partners has been a partner of AmeriCorps for nearly 15 years, engaging more than 300 AmeriCorps members serving thousands of children each year. Reading Partners works with under-resourced schools in geographic centers around the country and partners with individuals, companies, and organizations that provide volunteers, funding, and services to local programs.

Reading Partners is highlighted as one of five effective one-on-one literacy tutoring programs in a June 2017 report conducted by Research for Action for the William Penn Foundation entitled “Supporting Literacy in Out-of-School Time: Summary of Evidence.” Reading Partners has a strong ESSA rating from Evidence for ESSA and has been recognized as a Library of Congress Best Practice Honoree. CEO Adeola Whitney has been named one of the top 100 influencers in EdTech.

A fourth-grade student shared, “Mr. Matt is one of the reasons why I like reading now. I appreciate him because he took the time out of his life just to be with me and help me learn.” A tutor described the experience by saying, “It’s a life changing experience when you help a child learn to read.”
