About
Coastal Cove Learning offers a mix of daily outdoor exploration and hands-on projects, including zip lining, hammock reading, gardening, baking and cooking, art, lawn games, sewing, arts and crafts, and basic woodworking. Campers also prepare their own daily lunches, practice basic cooking skills, and take care of their personal work space and exploration materials. Daily outdoor activities include a community circle, a core lesson and exploration, movement and mindfulness, lunch preparations, garden check-ins, walking field trip excursions to local beaches and hiking trails, and team building games.
• Ages: 10–15 years old
• Schedule: Weekly day programs run from 8:45am–3:15pm, with an optional Extended Exploration period from 3:00pm–5:00pm
• Price: A parent payment plan is offered
The program includes daily walking field trips and, in 2026, two driving field trips per week. Weekly walking field trips may include Linda Mar State Beach, Rockaway Beach, local hiking trails, San Pedro Creek, the Farmers Market, and Pacifica Pier. Driving field trips may include Spring Lake Water Park, Fort Baker, Año Nuevo, Memorial State Park, a farmer’s market, a jelly bean factory, Golden Gate Park, and other destinations. There are about 16–18 campers per week, with a 9:1 camper to teacher ratio, and snacks and lunches are provided.
In 2026, summer registration is listed as full, and there is a tentative Session 3B called “Let’s Go Camping!” that may include two nights of camping at Memorial Park Campground in the coastal mountains of Pescadero if there is enough interest; if interest in overnight camping is lower, the program will revert to the regular day camp session. The summer program uses an interdisciplinary approach to teach environmental studies, natural science, and life skills, and to promote appreciation of natural outdoor surroundings and collaborative learning. The program’s mission is to create a lifelong passion for learning through experiential education in the natural environment.
Camp leaders Heiko and Kiyomi (also listed as Kiyomi Arai and Heike Gieraths) have an extensive educational background with over 22 years of teaching experience. The program brings in or visits community members and businesses, such as fitness instructors, artists, and entrepreneurs, to enrich the curriculum and the campers’ experiences.
