For 20 years, First Tee has been changing the sport of golf and working to shape and impact the lives of kids. The organization’s mission is to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values, and promote healthy choices through the game of golf. It is a youth development organization that integrates the game of golf with a life skills curriculum, including the First Tee Key Commitments of Pursuing Goals, Growing through Challenge, Collaborating with Others, Building Positive Self-Identity, and Using Good Judgment.

The leadership team includes CEO Teal Thron, Program Director – West Valley Emily Jansen, Program Director – East Valley Karla Garcia, and Competitive Activities Director Mike McFaul. Desert Recreation District is listed as a community partner, and more than 1,000 PGA and LPGA teaching professionals and 25,000 volunteers work together to teach kids the First Tee Key Commitments and life skills.

Financial aid with partial and full scholarships is available for the Life Skills Program, and no financial aid is available for the Desert Willow Academy. A one-time account creation fee is required for new parent registration, class switches are not allowed after Week 2 of a session, and refunds are not issued for classes that are cancelled. Participants must be enrolled in a First Tee class to participate in LPGA/USGA Girls Golf classes, and parents must stay at least 50 yards away from classes, except for Little Linksters chaperones.

If a participant needs to borrow golf clubs for class, this must be indicated during the registration process. Parents must purchase their own range balls and are not permitted to use the participant’s balls. Golf equipment donations are accepted at the Golf Center in Palm Desert by talking to the front counter staff.
