• Ages: 9–18 years old
• Schedule: five weeks of intensive academic enrichment each summer
• Price: fully funded summer enrichment experience; fully funded summer academic enrichment program
Founded in 1990, Partnership for Success serves more than 400 students in a community-based program supporting the growth and success of students in Pasadena. The program is a collaborative effort between the Pasadena Unified School District and four Pasadena independent schools: Chandler, Mayfield Junior, Polytechnic, and Westridge. Principals from Pasadena’s public elementary schools identify 4th grade students for participation, and the program maintains partnerships with PUSD K–8 elementary schools, K–8 schools, middle schools, 6–12 schools, high schools, and a TK–12 school. Classes are kept small, with an average of 16 students per classroom at some sites and academic enrichment classes typically limited to 15 learners.
The program focuses on academic enrichment, college readiness, career exploration, community engagement, and mentoring. A college counseling program begins in 9th grade and continues through high school graduation, and 100% of Partnership for Success graduates are accepted to college. Nearly 80% of Scholars are the first in their families to attend college, and alumni and students from independent school partners are eligible to work as paid teaching interns.
Partnership for Success states that its mission is to empower Pasadena Unified School District students to realize their full academic and personal potential through a transformative, fully funded summer enrichment experience, fostering confidence, creativity, leadership, and college and career readiness by connecting students with dynamic teaching, hands-on learning, and a supportive, inclusive community.
One student from the PFS Class of 2024, now a student at UC Irvine, describes progressing academically and personally over nine summers and learning how to navigate college applications, resumes, and financial aid. Another student from the PFS Class of 2024, now at Cal Poly Pomona, reports feeling like a valued member of the community, meeting a best friend, and taking classes that were both captivating and practical, with support as a first-generation college student. A third student from the PFS Class of 2024, now at Yale, describes gaining tools, connections, and resources each summer, including one-on-one support during the essay and college application process, and highlights friendships and community built through deep conversations and Friday BBQs.
