• Ages: 5–14 years old
Local Tours are part of a larger U.S. Kids Golf structure in which more than 1600 tournaments are organized yearly in over 60 markets, where players ages 5 to 14 learn to compete in their local community and then advance to State, Regional, and World Championships. Two-day events such as State Invitational tournaments and Regional Championships are ranked by Junior Golf Scoreboard, and at each level players may earn Priority Status to gain entry into more challenging events. The World Championships are described as the pinnacle event in the world for youth golfers, with two events and over 2000 players from over 50 countries.
U.S. Kids Golf was started in 1996, the U.S. Kids Golf Foundation was formed in 2001, the Tour Series was introduced in 2007, and in 2008 the European Championship was started in East Lothian, Scotland. In 2009, U.S. Kids Golf began a partnership with the Positive Coaching Alliance, and in 2011 it began offering a continuing education and Certification program for coaches. In 2015, the Foundation purchased the Longleaf Golf & Country Club and later changed the name to Longleaf Golf & Family Club, which is treated as a living laboratory for growing kids and family golf in a club environment. Dan Van Horn is the founder of U.S. Kids Golf, LLC and serves as President of U.S. Kids Golf.
Over 2000 PGA and LPGA professionals have attended the U.S. Kids Golf continuing education and Certification program, and U.S. Kids Certified Coaches are available and described as a great choice to help young players learn and enjoy the game. The U.S. Kids Golf Top 50 award recognizes coaches yearly at the PGA of America show for their outstanding ability to teach the game to kids, and coaches receiving the award three times become Master Kids Coaches; over 110 Master Kids Coaches have been recognized. The U.S. Kids Golf Foundation operates as a recognized 501(c)(3) public charity.
U.S. Kids Golf offers nine sizes and three models of clubs, and players are fit by height instead of age. Ultralight kids clubs were designed to be 25% lighter than adult and most junior clubs, and Ultralight clubs are described as being up to 30 percent lighter than adult clubs. Tour Series club heads are 5% heavier than those in the Ultralight system and have stiffer shafts. The Yard Club has a molded grip that teaches proper hand placement, an oversized but extremely lightweight head with a pitching wedge loft, and a flexible lightweight shaft. Forward Tees in the Family Tee program allow kids to play from locations where pars, birdies, and eagles are attainable at an early age, and this Family Tee program is partnered with the PGA of America, with over 1500 courses in the United States having established Forward Tee locations so kids and families can play the same course together.
