Steve & Kate’s Camp has been operating since 1980. The camp’s mission states that during summer, it gives kids freedom to expand and evolve by letting campers choose which activities they do, whom they do them with, and for how long, and describes this experience as both pure joy for kids and a kind of training ground for life where they are empowered, independent, resilient, and responsible for their own decisions. The camp describes its philosophy as emphasizing that kids are empowered to make their own choices and be their own bosses.
The program states that campers choose which activities they do, whom they do it with, and for how long. It notes that parents can buy any number of day passes, send their child to camp any day they want, drop off and pick up at any time within camp hours, and receive an automatic refund for any unused passes at the end of summer. Long camp hours, meals, and snacks are included, and cuisine includes rotating specials along with healthy snacks and sides available whenever kids are hungry. The camp also notes that it has more than 70 locations, which it describes as “glorious islands of freedom.”
The camp lists Youngest Camper Support Staff dedicated to supporting the youngest campers. Weekly specials may include new giant inflatables, musical performances, movement workshops, and popup petting zoos. Friday Water Play on specified dates can feature water tag, inflatable slip n’ slides, and a giant sprinkler. On the last day of camp, Carnival Day includes carnival games, extra treats, and chances to win prizes, along with options such as a giant inflatable, inflatable sports game, and retro style arcade games.
Steve & Kate’s Camp partners with fan favorite restaurants to provide food. As it gets closer to summer, registered families receive an email with a link to a virtual camp orientation that covers local camp drop-off and pick-up procedures, how to check in and out each day, what to bring and not bring, and additional camp details.
Testimonials about Steve & Kate’s Camp include comments from Andrew Stanton, Director of WALL-E, Finding Nemo, and Finding Dory, who says that children at the camp “blossom and discover a freedom of identity” and that “kids find their thumbprint at Steve & Kate’s.” Apple’s Hot News states, “If kids ruled the world, it might look something like Steve and Kate’s Camp.” Variety magazine notes that Steve and Kate’s Camp did not set out to cater to children of people at Pixar and Industrial Light & Magic, but that “given their philosophy, it’s no surprise so many attend.” The Washington Post describes the camp as a blend of traditional camp experience with a modern, tech-savvy touch and mentions its “Silicon Valley-inspired innovative approaches to everything from programming to payment.” The Chicago Tribune states, “Working parents’ worries dissipate as they contemplate Steve & Kate’s model.”
