About
Mountain Camp is a co-ed summer overnight resident camp for campers entering 2nd–12th grades. The program follows a minimal technology, non-competitive structure. Camp tours are available on Sundays during the summer season that fall between sessions, and each tour typically lasts 30 to 45 minutes.
• Ages: 7–17 years old
Mountain Camp’s stated mission is to offer a minimal technology, non-competitive program that is designed to make sure each child succeeds and to create a fun and safe environment that encourages independence while nurturing lasting friendships. The program’s goal is to get campers outside, actively creating, playing, and learning lifelong outdoor skills at a time when children are increasingly surrounded by computers, televisions, and video games. The camp describes itself as outstanding at teaching the values of self-reliance and resourcefulness, facilitating relationships with a focus on collaboration and communication, and providing opportunities for creativity, problem-solving, critical thinking, exploration, play, and adventure, which it identifies as Social Emotional Learning skills that educational experts believe are essential for future success. Mountain Camp states that camp is critical to the education and development of children and calls it the best possible “classroom” for learning these skills, with the goal that the experiences, friendships, and laughter stay with campers for the rest of their lives.
One parent, Dayle B, reports that their children look forward to returning for four weeks every summer and that they always come home happier and more self-assured than when they left, and also notes appreciation that the children are getting a taste of independence and figuring out their own identity in what the parent describes as the safe, nurturing environment of camp.
