Cignition K-12 High-Impact Virtual Tutoring is led by a large corps of certified teachers who average over a decade of classroom experience and use a data-informed tutoring program. The program focuses on high-impact K-12 math and ELA virtual tutoring, with personalized sessions that match students with their ideal tutor and maintain a 4:1 student-to-tutor ratio. Instruction uses a research-based approach that emphasizes data-informed instruction, collaborative learning, student-to-student interaction, and standards-aligned lessons, with a focus on learning acceleration, equity, learning recovery, and improving overall confidence in the classroom. Cignition’s first offering, the FogStone Isle virtual world math supplement, is award-winning and has been used by hundreds of thousands of elementary and middle school students and their teachers nationwide. Cignition’s core values are Passion, Agency, Curiosity, Partnership, Flexibility, and Integrity.

Cignition was founded in 2014 with the mission of building conceptual understanding, one engaged learner at a time. In 2018, Cignition was awarded a grant through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Chan-Zuckerberg Initiative, and Schmidt Futures for the research and development of its data-informed tutoring program, and the tutoring program was piloted during the 2018–2019 school year. A Randomized Controlled Trial was completed in early 2020, after which Cignition tutoring was launched broadly to school districts nationwide, and additional grant funding was awarded through the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and Overdeck Family foundations to extend data-informed tutoring with a focus on collaborative learning. The leadership team includes Michael Cohen (Founder & CEO), Danielle Alcaraz (SVP - Sales), Toni Rader (Director of Program & Client Success), Matt Kennedy (Marketing Manager), and Scott Holman (Engineering Director).

Cignition works hand-in-hand with district and school administrators to understand students’ specific learning needs and has collaborated with Baltimore City Schools, including the office, OMIT, and math content liaisons, to set up tutoring structures at seven schools. District and school staff report that Cignition provides after-school tutoring in multiple elementary schools, supports virtual tutoring for hundreds of sixth-grade students, and shares weekly updates on attendance, student engagement, and teacher feedback. Educators and administrators describe students interacting with virtual Cignition tutors, working in small groups with different mathematical thought processes, engaging collaboratively in meaningful mathematics, and participating in standards-based activities, with regular communication such as weekly check-ins to review attendance, progress, and topics for tutors to cover. One instructional coach reported that a seventh grader expressed excitement about taking a reading diagnostic because of what she was learning in tutoring with Cignition and that this student grew 100 points from fall to winter.
