About
The San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League offers mentorship programs, recreational activities, academic achievement programs, leadership and character development programs, and health and wellness programs. All programs have the stated goal of building the bond between deputies and youth, and they include activities such as tutoring, literacy support, STEM projects, academic mentoring, Teen Leadership Council, Empowering Young Women, mentoring, and Early Stage Intervention and Diversion programs. Therapy K9s Ben, Teddy, and Maverick work alongside School Resource Officers as part of the program.
SAL was founded in 1997 by former Sheriff Don Horsley, and in 2009 former Sheriff Greg Munks expanded the program to 12 locations throughout San Mateo County. The leadership team listed in program materials includes School Resource Officers Deputy James Hajik, Deputy Joaquin Moreno, Deputy Andrea Dion, and Deputy Danielle Martinez, along with Therapy K9s Ben, Teddy, and Maverick. The mission of the San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League is to invest in all youth of San Mateo County by offering impactful programs that guide them towards unlocking their full potential and to build strong relationships between deputies, youth, families, and the community.
The organization was founded to strengthen relationships between youth, deputies, and communities to aid in the intervention and prevention of juvenile delinquency in San Mateo County through positive, dynamic programs. It engages in community policing practices that promote police and community partnerships with a problem-solving approach responsive to community needs, aiming to reduce the fear and incidence of crime and improve the quality of life in neighborhoods countywide. Program materials describe health and wellness programs that offer hands-on activities and education to promote healthy habits and reduce juvenile diabetes and related diseases, as well as programs aimed at building fundamental life skills, increasing self-confidence, teaching teens leadership skills, and empowering youth to make a positive impact in their community and schools.
A youth perspective shared through the program describes experiences at a toy drive, STAR Camp, and a Halloween Trunk or Treat event, noting moments such as campers seeing a horse, a campfire, or a summer camp for the first time. Program materials also state that, “From mentorship programs that inspire future leaders to recreational activities that promote teamwork and resilience, our initiatives create lasting change.”
