About

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League offers mentorship programs, recreational activities, and academic support such as tutoring, literacy, STEM, and academic mentoring. The program also runs special events and programs including a toy drive, STAR Camp, Halloween Trunk or Treat, Teen Leadership Council, Empowering Young Women, and Early Stage Intervention and Diversion programs. Health and wellness programs include hands-on activities and education to reduce juvenile diabetes and related diseases, and the program uses Therapy K9s named Ben, Teddy, and Maverick.

The San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League was founded in 1997 by former Sheriff Don Horsley, and in 2009 former Sheriff Greg Munks expanded the program to 12 locations throughout the county. Its mission is to invest in all youth of San Mateo County by offering impactful programs that guide them towards unlocking their full potential and to build strong relationships between deputies, youth, families, and the community. The program was founded with the purpose of strengthening relationships between youth, deputies, and communities to aid in the intervention and prevention of juvenile delinquency in San Mateo County through positive, dynamic programs. It has a community policing substation that is a permanent home for its programs, and community policing in this context promotes police and community partnerships with a problem-solving approach that is responsive to the needs of the community. All programs have the stated goal of building the bond between deputies and youth, and they include leadership and character development opportunities such as the Teen Leadership Council, Empowering Young Women, mentoring, and Early Stage Intervention and Diversion programs, as well as programs aimed at building fundamental life skills, increasing self-confidence, teaching teens leadership skills, and empowering youth to make a positive impact in their community and schools.

According to the San Mateo County Sheriff's Activities League, more than 2,000 kids are served in San Mateo County per year, 86% of program participants show improved academic achievement, and 100% of participants are matched with positive mentors. One youth perspective from Destiny Cortez describes experiences during the toy drive, STAR Camp, and Halloween Trunk or Treat, including families receiving toys, campers seeing a horse, eating a s’more, seeing a campfire, or attending a summer camp for the first time, and community members receiving candy and having a small moment of happiness and relief.
