Norcal Crew is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to the development of youth through the sport of rowing and is supported by its membership and the surrounding community. The organization is overseen by a board of directors and managed by an executive director and coaching staff. Its mission is to create success by providing high-level training for student athletes across the San Francisco Peninsula, with a comprehensive training program to strengthen student-athletes’ personal development and athleticism, and it strives to develop athletes into national champions. Norcal Crew has been a nationally ranked crew and continues to be competitive every year, and the program has grown steadily over the past decade to nearly 200 members across the men’s and women’s teams. Norcal believes that all athletes deserve to row regardless of their ability to cover the costs and is committed to making the opportunity to row available to any athletes who want to train. Norcal has top-of-the-line racing shells, including eights, fours, quads, doubles, pairs, and singles. Rowers are four times as likely to be recruited to a college than any other NCAA sport, and crew is described as a lifelong sport with participants who row well into their seventies at masters regattas held throughout the country.
Parents describe Norcal as fostering a community of athletes in a safe, challenging, and fun environment, and note that their children have developed as competitive athletes while making lifelong friends, as shared by the Jett Family. The Hill Family describes Norcal as an incredible combination of a highly competitive team and a supportive environment with top notch coaches building great skills on and off the water, and they say their daughter has built friendships and life skills that will be with her forever. The Pirasenna Family shares that their two boys are rowers at Norcal, that the level of effort is intense, and that they are amazed the boys do not mind the early hours or long practices, and they state that the discipline and focus rowing brings is unmatched and that the friendships their boys have made are extremely strong and will last a lifetime.
