Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation states that its mission is to provide a comprehensive sailing program for all youth in the Bay Area, from learn-to-sail to travel teams, with classes that stress safety and cultivate the values of character, community, and competitiveness, and that the program instills lifelong enjoyment and stewardship of waterways, oceans, and the world environment. The program identifies three entry points based on age: Guppies for ages 6–7, Learn to Sail for ages 8–11, and Adventure Sailing for ages 12–18, and notes that boats are provided for all of these introductory-level classes. Guppies uses 8′ Cubes, 18′ keelboats, and coachboats, Learn to Sail uses Cube sailboats, and Learn to Sail 3.0 and Opti Development use Optimist boats, with boat ownership needed for the Opti and 420 Race Teams after the first season and families with tow-capable vehicles sometimes asked to share towing responsibilities for regattas. The organization states that all sailors in Guppies, Learn to Sail, Adventure Sailing, and related classes must be comfortable in the water while wearing a life jacket, that Opti Development athletes travel and compete in regattas throughout California and beyond, and that the program emphasizes sailing as a sport where sailors are part of a team. Peninsula Youth Sailing Foundation is a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, led by Executive Director John Vandemoer, and offers need-based scholarships as part of its mission to be a community sailing program that teaches sailing regardless of ability to pay. The program also encourages sailors to intern as Junior Instructors and notes thanks to its current grantors and community partners.
