About
Steadfast Martial Arts offers training in Jiu Jitsu, wrestling, Muay Thai, combat sports, and kickboxing. The program takes place in an inclusive, state-of-the-art training facility with state-of-the-art training spaces. Walk-ins are welcome.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
The leadership team includes Caleb Khan, who is a black belt under Eduardo Fraga and Ralph Gracie and serves as an instructor, competitor, and head of the grappling program at Steadfast Martial Arts; Jon Lawrence, who coaches youth and adult Muay Thai; Anita Shammee, who is a martial arts instructor; Gian Traverso, who is a wrestling coach; and Alan Joyce, who is a Jiu-Jitsu instructor. Jon Lawrence began Muay Thai training at Cheetah Muay Thai in Oakland in 2010, taught PE in Richmond for two years, trained at Rawai Muay Thai in 2014, started the KickSmart program that combined Muay Thai and meditation in public schools in Richmond and Oakland, and has coached youth and adults at PFMMA in Albany and at Guardian Gym in Oakland. Anita Shammee began Enshin Karate at age 8 under Nima Mazhari in Falls Church, VA, trained for 15 years, won 5 world championships from 2012 to 2016, began training jiu-jitsu at Ralph Gracie Berkeley in 2016, and received her black belt from Eduardo Fraga in 2024.
Steadfast Martial Arts states that it believes in fostering strength, skill, and confidence through inclusive and rigorous training and offers Jiu Jitsu and other combat sports programs for youth and adults. The program focuses on rigorous and technical training to create well rounded fighters and future instructors and gives members tools to get in shape, develop confidence, and, if interested, become future Steadfast instructors or black belts. The facility is described as a supportive, inclusive training environment and a safe space where members can train hard and feel safe while learning various martial arts. Jon Lawrence’s community work includes starting KickSmart in public schools in Richmond and Oakland and bringing his efforts to Guardian Gym in Oakland to offer free kickboxing training to Oakland youth when most gyms were closed.
