Rocklin Basketball Club features coaching from former standout players who have competed at high school, junior college, Division I, and professional levels. The program highlights the story of the 2001 Rocklin High School varsity team, whose players mostly grew up together and were taught and trained with a consistent, fundamental message throughout their youth. Coaches in the program, including Coach Smith and Coach Ost, have extensive playing experience through college and professional levels.
The program’s leadership includes Ken Smith (phone: (916) 267-8173) and Brett Ost (phone: (916) 316-1812). Coach Smith is a Yuba Junior College Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, was First Team All Sac-Metro in 2001 at Encina High School, the second leading scorer in the area at 25 points per game in 2001, and MVP of the Optimist Game (Sacramento area high school all-star game). He was a two-year starter and captain at Yuba Junior College, earned First Team All-Bay Valley Conference honors there, received a full scholarship to Angelo State University of Texas, was a two-year starter, captain, and All Conference honoree at Angelo State, holds the all-time three-point record at Angelo State, and played three years professionally in the ABA. Coach Ost is also a Yuba Junior College Athletic Hall of Fame inductee, was Sierra Foothill League MVP at Rocklin High School in 2001, part of the Sierra Foothill League Champions in 2001, and a member of the first ever Sac-Joaquin Section Championship team at Rocklin High School in 2001. He was First Team All Sac-Metro in 2001, graduated from Rocklin High School with a 4.6 GPA, was a two-year starter and captain at Yuba Junior College, Bay Valley Conference Champion in 2003, Bay Valley Conference MVP in 2003, First Team All-State at Yuba in 2003 while leading the state in assists, and set all-time assist and free throw percentage records at Yuba, where he was also named Male Student Athlete of the Year in 2003. He earned a Division I full-ride scholarship to the University of California, Riverside in the Big West Conference and was a two-year starter and captain at UC Riverside.
Rocklin Basketball Club is connected to Rocklin High School for both boys and girls in the community and references Coach Steve Taylor’s Rocklin Basketball Camps and the Rocklin youth basketball experience. The club shares the history of the 2001 Rocklin High School varsity team, which went 32–4 and became the first men’s basketball league and section champions in the school’s history. Both Coach Smith and Coach Ost are recognized as Yuba Junior College Athletic Hall of Fame inductees, and the 2001 Rocklin High School varsity team is noted as the first men’s basketball league and section champions in Rocklin High School history.
