Jade Chinese School was founded by Ms. Julia Tai, who was born in Taiwan and has worked in both Taiwan and Mainland China. All teachers are native Mandarin Chinese speakers who are also fluent in English, draw from previous teaching experience and the school’s training program, and are trained to specialize in certain levels of Mandarin Chinese proficiency. Many teachers hold advanced master’s degrees in education, linguistics, and related fields, including staff with degrees such as an MA in Teaching English for Speakers of Other Languages from the University of Southern California and an MA in Applied Linguistics from East China Normal University, along with teaching experience in the United States, China, and Thailand. The school’s mission is to help students and adults build confidence from learning Chinese in an effective way to achieve their learning goals and excel in their social life.
The program includes features such as “Mandarin Made Easy,” small conversation-focused classes tailored to student goals, and curriculums for both private and group classes. The school states that 80% of classes are interactive, that lessons cover listening, speaking, reading, writing, and typing, and that classes can be customized for travel, business, or personal enrichment. The school describes an unconventional teaching style to develop listening, speaking, reading, and writing, and notes that students with no prior experience can, over one month or 12 hours of instruction, distinguish and pronounce the four tones, transcribe pinyin, write about 30 words, and speak on simple topics. The program offers optional enrichment activities involving Chinese culture, a free lesson for prospective students to experience the teaching approach, and flexible in-person or online formats.
The school shares that the HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is China’s only official test of Chinese language proficiency for non-native speakers, developed in 1984 with the first overseas test in 1991, and the site states “Perfect Score on HSK exam!” Over the years, Jade Chinese School has tutored professional students such as engineers, managers, regional leaders, managing directors, VPs, and CEOs at companies including Apple, LVMH Group, Tencent, NetEase, Supor, and BASF. One testimonial notes that “Julia is capable of finding the challenges that each student has with the language... and quickly addressing those.” The school name characters 嘉玉 are explained as meaning “praiseworthy fine jade,” with additional cultural explanation of jade and the red logo symbolism, and the school maintains a mailing list that shares blog posts, school updates, and fun activities.
