About
Beanstalk Child Care Programs offers child care and preschool programs that include preschool and toddler 3-hour programs at four centers with morning and afternoon sessions, full-day preschool at three centers, and full-day toddler care at two centers for 2-year-olds. The program includes school readiness for 3- and 4-year-olds and education-based care in family child care homes for children from birth through 12 years. Beanstalk also operates a food program that provides nutritious meals to children in child care homes and offers cash reimbursement, training resources, and technical assistance to child care providers.
• Ages: Birth–12 years old
• Schedule: Main office hours Monday–Friday 7:30 am–4:30 pm
Beanstalk Child Care Programs began in 1973 as a pilot project under the Foundation of California State University, Sacramento, called Community Child Care Programs, changed its name in 1996 to B.J. Jordan Child Care Programs, and adopted the name Beanstalk in 2001. It is a California non-profit organization that has served the Greater Sacramento Area since 1973 and acts as an umbrella sponsor for over 600 licensed family child care homes throughout the region. The organization’s mission is to provide children and families with care, education, and nutrition programs in centers and family child care homes that are safe, affordable, and culturally and linguistically responsive.
Beanstalk’s programs are described as designed to meet the developmental needs of children and to provide experiences that support and enrich children’s thinking, language, social/emotional, physical, and creative abilities. Each program’s daily schedule is described as offering chances for children to create and explore the environment, learn concepts, solve problems, build personal interaction and self-help skills, work on small and large muscle development, and gain independence through active experiences with materials and people relevant to their own experiences. Family child care home providers in the network are licensed and insured and may receive one-on-one coaching and support, increased child care enrollment, professional learning opportunities, loaned large equipment, resources and educational information, consumable supplies, toys and materials, and optional participation in the Beanstalk Child Care Food Program.
In the food program, meals must meet standards established by the USDA, and providers are reimbursed for up to three meals per day per child when they follow specified USDA component requirements for breakfast, snacks, lunch, and dinner. Beanstalk staff regularly monitor homes and centers for compliance with food program rules and offer technical assistance and training. Children in centers and homes that use the food program receive well-balanced and nutritious meals, and the program structure means providers on the food program do not charge parents for meals.
The Family Child Care Home Education Network (FCCHEN) offers participating providers one-on-one coaching and support, excellent rates and timely payments, increased child care enrollment, professional learning opportunities, loaned large equipment, resources and handouts, educational information, consumable supplies, toys and materials, and the option to join the Beanstalk Child Care Food Program. Beanstalk notes that it has many locations across Sacramento and offers flexible days and hours, and it is currently enrolling free or low-cost child care and preschool programs.
The leadership team includes Executive Director Farooq Azhar, Fiscal Director Qari Zeb, HR Manager Mary Neilsen, Program Director Paula Burchett, Food Program lead Juanita Royal, and Program Manager Karen Hamman. One testimonial describes Beanstalk’s preschools as “amazing preschools” and recommends them for families with 3- or 4-year-olds looking for quality care. Another testimonial states that Beanstalk is “a great program,” notes that it is educational with many activities for children, mentions the nutrition program so children are eating healthy, and says it has helped the parent’s child in many ways.
