About
Safari Camp includes direct interaction with animals through activities such as A Walk with the Rhinos, Walk with the Animals, Crunch Time (feeding time for big cats), and Buddy's Bedtime (putting a rhino to bed). The program also offers Rydables Tours, VIAP Tours, and educational presentations that can be enjoyed at the Monterey Zoo facility or brought to a school or event. Safari Camp takes place at a zoo that is home to more than 100 exotic animals ranging from spiders to African elephants, where visitors can get up close and personal with wild, exotic animals from around the world.

Monterey Zoo is Monterey County’s first zoological property and is located on the 51-acre Vision Quest Ranch, which was purchased by founder Charlie Sammut in 1994. The zoo’s mission states that, while providing exemplary animal care, Monterey Zoological Society is dedicated to providing an entertaining yet educational and conservation minded experience which fosters public awareness and respect for all wildlife. The zoo continues to run full-time educational programs that touch thousands of children and adults annually. Monterey Zoo was accredited by the Zoological Association of America (ZAA) in June of 2020 and received the ZAA Exhibit Award in 2023 for its “Insert Rhino” Exhibit, as well as the ZAA In-Situ Conservation Award for its contribution and efforts to conserve and protect rhinos worldwide. Vision Quest Ranch B&B at the parent property offers overnight stays, with daily zoo admission complimentary for Bed and Breakfast guests, and private group visits and private picnic areas are available with reservations. Rydables at the zoo are described as adorable stuffed animals on the outside and super safe mobility-style electric carts on the inside, and VIAP Tours include a close and full contact encounter with four “Wild Things” and a catered deli style lunch with the keepers.
