Highlands Christian Preschool was founded in 1966. It is part of Highlands Christian Schools, a ministry of Church of the Highlands. The preschool is a non-denominational school where Christian beliefs are a vital and integral part of the preschool program, and it welcomes children into a Christian atmosphere of respect and loving appreciation for each person and for the wonders of God’s world. Highlands Christian Schools’ vision is “Educating For Excellence,” with a vision that each student has intellectual, spiritual, physical, and social excellence.
The program includes a toddler program for children ages 18 to 30 months, a Preschool I class for children ages 31 to 36 months that focuses primarily on potty training, Preschool I for ages 2.5–3 years old, and Preschool II for 3–4 year olds that are designed to guide children through learning buildable skills. The Kinder College program serves 4–5 year olds with an emphasis on academic growth to set children up for success when they enter Kindergarten. Teachers focus on spiritual, academic, social, and emotional growth, and the program is based on the belief that each child possesses God-given gifts that are cultivated and developed through Biblical teachings and activities.
Highlands Christian Preschool uses the Abeka and Saxon academic curriculum, focusing on foundational skills in phonics, reading, math, science, and social studies. Abeka offers a strong Christian worldview, and Saxon, used for Kinder College, emphasizes spelling patterns and letter coding techniques to help students understand the relationships between sounds and letters. The Lillio Curriculum is used for Toddlers and Preschool students and follows the California Preschool Learning Foundations and Infant/Toddler Learning and Development Foundations, with an engaging monthly theme and support for development through hands-on crafts, fine-motor activities, songs, stories, and early academic concepts that are tailored to be age- and skill-appropriate. A Social and Emotional Curriculum is included to teach preschoolers skills like managing feelings, understanding others, communicating well, and solving problems with friends. The Simply Loved Bible Curriculum is a Bible-centered program with stories from both the Old and New Testaments, worship songs, and memory verses.
Motor Fitness focuses on developing gross motor skills through physical activities that promote strength, coordination, balance, and overall physical development. Library visitations foster a love for reading through regular visits to the library with exposure to a variety of books and storytelling sessions. Art class encourages children to explore creativity and understand visual arts concepts, expressing themselves through different mediums. Vacation Bible School is a fun, faith-based summer program offering Bible lessons, songs, crafts, and activities over five weeks to deepen understanding of Christian values and foster community.
Highlands Preschool is licensed through the Department of Social Services and the State of California, LIC #410500303. Highlands Christian Schools admits students of any race, color, national, and ethnic origin and does not discriminate on that basis in administration of its policies and programs.
The leadership team includes Fidel Batnag (Head of Schools), Jonah Erickson (Principal, Middle School English Teacher), Melanie Cabie (Director of Student Services), Crystal Camacho (Preschool Director), Samaa Srouji (Associate Director of Preschool), Irma Diaz (Director of Admissions), Kevin Valera (Athletic Director), and Jay Zaben (Office Manager).
Parent testimonials describe children loving their teachers and enjoying going to school, and one parent notes seeing progress in a short time at Highlands Christian Schools. Another parent describes teachers Ms. Gloria and Ms. Grace providing hands-on learning experiences, including song and dance, and mentions that the child is learning a Christian foundation at the preschool. A third parent thanks the staff for keeping children safe and enjoying learning, and specifically notes that their child, after attending the Bear class, was able to memorize Bible verses and songs, which is important to their Christian family.
