San Clemente Soccer Club was founded in 1987, was resurrected as San Clemente United Soccer Club in 1997, and joined Surf Nation as San Clemente Surf Soccer Club in 2014. The club is part of Surf Nation, which has more than 50 clubs across the United States collaborating to create experiences for coaches and players, including the Surf Select program where top Surf club players gather annually for regional and national ID camps and form regional and national teams that compete in international and national tournaments in the USA and Europe. The Surf mission is to create “Best of the Best” experiences and opportunities for its players.

The leadership history includes founders Clyde Best (West Ham) and Martin McGrogan, and Reza Cherif, who resurrected the club as San Clemente United Soccer Club in 1997. John Merritt assisted in establishing a strong reputation for developing local talent, and Kerri McClellan guided successful community projects that promoted team building, leadership, and giving back to those less fortunate. Current Director of Coaching Chris Murray joined the club in 2004 and helped build and evolve a professional development soccer model based on his experiences in professional soccer in Europe. Dave Nolan of Claremont McKenna serves as college director, and Coach Tori Phillips led the Girls 2011 Surf Select National team.

Clyde Best was later awarded an MBE for services to football and the community of Bermuda. In 2011, several San Clemente Club coaches led San Clemente High School Boys Varsity to win CIF and State and achieve rankings of No. 1 in the State of California and No. 8 in the United States. In 2024, Coach Tori Phillips led the Girls 2011 Surf Select National team to win the Super Cup in Northern Ireland and was recognized as the Surf Select National Coach of the Year. Dozens of club players have committed to higher education institutions with college athletic and academic scholarships, and five former San Clemente Surf players served as captains of their respective college soccer programs between 2018 and 2023, including five college commits in 2024 such as Griffin Blair to Cal State Fullerton.
