About
San Clemente Surf Soccer Club offers specific soccer activities including Camps and Clinics, Lil Surfers Recreation, Surf Classic, and Surf Select. Through the Surf Select program, top Surf club players nominated by their respective clubs gather annually for regional and national ID camps and then form regional and national teams that compete in prestigious international and national tournaments in both the USA and Europe.
San Clemente Soccer Club was founded in 1987, and in 1993 founders Martin McGrogan and Clyde Best started the Irvine Valley Soccer (IRV) program. Reza Cherif resurrected the club as San Clemente United Soccer Club in 1997, and in 2014 the club joined Surf Nation as San Clemente Surf Soccer Club. In 2011, several San Clemente Club coaches led San Clemente High School Boys Varsity to win CIF and State and achieve rankings of No.1 in California and No.8 in the United States.
The current Director of Coaching, Chris Murray, joined the club in 2004 and helped build and evolve a professional development soccer model based on his experiences in professional soccer in Europe. The leadership team also includes college director Dave Nolan, who is the Claremont McKenna Head Coach, Coach Tori Phillips, founders Clyde Best and Martin McGrogan, Reza Cherif, John Merritt, and Kerri McClellan. The club’s mission, as part of Surf, is “To create ‘Best of the Best’ experiences and opportunities for our players.”
The club is part of Surf Nation, which has more than 50 clubs across the United States collaborating to create experiences for coaches and players. The Surf Select program brings together top Surf club players for regional and national ID camps, and select players form regional and national teams that compete in prestigious international and national tournaments in the USA and Europe. The club has placed more than 20 players with colleges such as Loyola Marymount University (LMU), Wheaton, Southern Methodist University (SMU), University of San Francisco, and Point Loma, and in the past few years dozens of club players have committed to higher education institutions around the country with college athletic and academic scholarships. Between 2018 and 2023, five former San Clemente Surf players served as captains of their respective soccer programs, and in 2024 there were five college commits including Griffin Blair to Cal State Fullerton.
Clyde Best was awarded an MBE for services to football and the community of Bermuda. In 2024, Coach Tori Phillips led the Girls 2011 Surf Select National team to win the Super Cup in Northern Ireland and was recognized as the Surf Select National Coach of the Year. Under the guidance of Kerri McClellan, the club initiated community projects that focused on team building, leadership, and giving back to those less fortunate.
