Art FORM is a nonprofit 501c3 established in 2011 and has provided free art education and environmental stewardship to the San Diego community for over 12 years. It focuses on creative reuse in its workshops for schools and the community and diverts over 8 tons of reusable materials per year. Art FORM serves over 500 local students through art workshops each year and engages over 1,500 additional community members during special events and partnerships in San Diego. The organization currently provides most of its programming free of charge to San Diego Mid-City public elementary schools and offers several free community engagement events each year.
Art FORM’s mission is to instill art education and environmental stewardship through creative reuse, using workshop content, process, and materials that involve art forms connected to ingenuity, problem solving, and conservation. The program integrates climate change education into its regular programming and has published The Pollinator Pantin Kit to connect students and families with art and nature, including during times of distance learning.
Art FORM’s leadership includes founder Erin Pennell, who is the Creative Program Director and an art educator, along with Shelby Homer on the store leadership team and as a teaching assistant, and Kory Berenson and Emma Schooner as store and studio assistants. Erin is a San Diego native who has worked in educational settings in San Francisco, San Luis Obispo County, and San Diego. Art FORM is governed by a Board of Directors. The Rare Hare Studio, connected to Art FORM’s history, launched in January 2008.
Art FORM also operates a Creative Reuse Store with an ever-changing inventory of items such as fabrics, paper, and yarn, described as a treasure trove of unique items available for purchase. Donation drop-offs are by appointment only, with photos and descriptions of donations emailed in advance for approval, and approved donations are brought to the Creative Reuse Store during business hours. Art FORM is involved in events with the San Diego River Park Foundation Center, including bird walks at Grant Park.
