Cygnet Theatre Education Programs are part of Cygnet Theatre, which is known for producing adventurous, entertaining and thought-provoking live professional theatre year round. The programs are connected to a company whose productions include a high percentage of local premieres and are balanced with classics and musicals. Cygnet believes strongly in bringing new voices to the community through its work on stage and within the organization.
Since its founding in 2003, Cygnet Theatre has grown into one of San Diego’s largest and leading theatre companies. Believing in the power of theatre to startle the soul, ignite debate and embrace the diversity of the community it serves, Cygnet Theatre Company states that it is committed to the dissection, examination and celebration of the human story through live theatre. In 2008, Cygnet moved to the 246-seat Old Town Theatre in Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where it reaches over 40,000 people annually, and in September of 2025, it moved into its new state-of-the-art home in Arts District Liberty Station, The Joan. Financial support for Cygnet Theatre is provided in part by the City of San Diego Commission for Arts & Culture.
Cygnet Theatre acknowledges that theatre culture locally and nationally has practiced racist and discriminatory behaviors that have resulted in the exclusion and mistreatment of BIPOC artists. The theatre re-commits to data-driven self-evaluation of its work environment internally and externally to identify and implement equity and inclusion throughout the organization. Cygnet Theatre has engaged in ongoing Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Belonging training for all of its staff with (R)EVOLVE Consulting beginning in July of 2021, has increased BIPOC representation at all levels of the institution, and has hired an Education, Outreach and Inclusion manager. The theatre is committed to a 5-day rehearsal week and 8-hour tech rehearsals to reflect its belief in balance.
