About

KeyNote Music Education Programs offers interactive music classes where children and families sing, dance, play, and learn together. Classes include music and movement activities, instrument demonstrations, and live guitar and ukulele playing, along with special touches like penny whistle. The program also offers English/Spanish bilingual options and uses an exclusive curriculum.

• Ages: Birth–18 years old

KeyNote includes an Early Childhood Music Program for children from birth to age 5 and their parents and caregivers, with three early childhood levels for ages 0–5. It also offers a two-year curriculum for ages 5–7, school-based programs for grades 3–6, and 15 ensembles for all levels ages 7–18, including ensembles for intermediate and advanced students ages 11–18. Activities are described as supporting socialization, school readiness, and motor skills.

KeyNote’s mission statement is that it instills excellence in musical achievement and personal growth through rigorous and inspiring music education experiences. The program is part of KeyNote’s cradle-to-college initiative and is launched to reposition the organization as a leader in music education across San Diego County. KeyNote represents a way of thinking about how non-profit organizations partner with families and communities, and the Community Opus Project was launched in collaboration with the Chula Vista Elementary School District.

KeyNote Music Education Programs are led by experienced and qualified teaching artists who are professional musicians and early childhood specialists. The leadership team includes Dr. Michael Remson, who joins SDYS as President & CEO, and Sameer Patel, who succeeds Jeff Edmons to become the fourth Artistic Director. The organization traces its history to September 6, 1945, when founder Leo Scheer conducted the first performance of the “Youth Symphony Orchestra of San Diego City and County” at San Diego High School’s Russ Auditorium.

Parents describe the program’s music and movement activities as “top notch” and “very appropriate for the group,” and note that teachers adapt easily for varying needs and attitudes in each class session. Several parents highlight specific instructors, mentioning Mr. Thiago’s guitar playing during songs, Miss Kat’s use of penny whistle, and Mr. Charlie’s energy and ability to read younger classes. Parents also mention that the curriculum incorporates different cultures, languages, and music theory, and that they value the playlists and the sense of community in class. Multiple parents refer to it as the best music class they have tried in San Diego and describe class time as filled with laughter and joy.
