About
Youth Media Workshops and Camps introduces participants to storytelling, cinematography, editing, animation, and green screen. The program uses hands-on activities to teach these different parts of media making.
• Ages: 6–18 years old
Media Arts Center San Diego has been teaching media arts classes and workshops to youth for more than 17 years and presents the globally acclaimed annual San Diego Latino Film Festival, as well as the iVIE Awards and Student Film Festival. Media Arts Center San Diego evolved out of the San Diego Latino Film Festival, which originated in 1993 and was incorporated in 1999. The San Diego Latino Film Festival celebrated its 25th anniversary in March 2018 and is now in its 30th year. Media Arts Center San Diego’s doors reopened on May 6, 2022, inside UCSD at Park & Market, after moving into a new space in North Park in 2012. Media Arts Center San Diego states that it is committed to providing new media tools and channels to create equitable and engaged communities where underserved voices are heard and serves people in marginalized communities by using media as a tool for social change and artistic expression. Its programs, events, and film festivals are created with participants and community collaboration in mind, and the organization is ADA compliant.
Media Arts Center San Diego’s community involvement includes Cine En El Parque, which offers free film screenings at Chicano Park, and the Que Viva Outdoor Cine Latino Series in San Ysidro. Other community projects include Speak City Heights, Talking Food Systems: Land & Freedom, Pulse for Life, #InCityHeights, and Frontera Filmmakers, a grassroots group that brings together independent filmmakers from both sides of the border. The Community Production Team works with clients to produce commercial videos. The Workforce Development Initiative is a paid 3–6 month internship with a City of San Diego Library that includes a 6-week video production training with Media Arts Center San Diego, and one of the programs provides career-building skills and technical instruction for system-engaged youth to explore the criminal justice system, restorative justice practices, and community through film.
