The YMCA of Greater San Francisco was established during the Gold Rush in 1853 and has more than 170 years of history. Its mission is to empower each person’s journey and strengthen the foundations of community. The organization is described as one of the area’s largest community service organizations, serving more than 130,000 people through 15 neighborhood branches, more than 130 program sites, and one residential camp across Marin, San Francisco, and San Mateo Counties. It is described as a 501(c)3 charitable community organization. One staff member shared, “The Y is a welcoming place for the community. I enjoy working here and love hearing about how the Y has played a role in the lives of everyone I meet at work and within the community.”
