About

CAL Tennis offers kids tennis lessons, kids tennis camps, after-school tennis, and private tennis lessons, along with clinics that include group instruction. The program also runs adult tennis lessons, adult tennis camps, and adult group tennis lessons in addition to its youth offerings. Camps, clinics, and private lessons are all part of the overall CAL Tennis schedule.

• Ages: 5–18 years old
• Schedule: Lesson, camp, and clinic options are available seven days a week, with operating hours from 6:00am to 10:00pm; clinics are 90 minutes with at least 3 students, or 60 minutes as a semi-private lesson if only 2 students are signed up

CAL Tennis was founded in 2021. The academy’s stated mission is to create a place for all players to have fun, socialize, play, and learn tennis in a supportive environment. Its founder has previously worked with the San Francisco Tennis Club (SFTC), Bay Club, U.C. Berkeley, the Youth Tennis Association (YTA), and the United States Tennis Association (USTA) providing tennis lessons, clinics, and camps for over 30 years. CAL Tennis notes that it is a leader in adult tennis camps, adult group tennis lessons, after-school tennis, kids camps, and private tennis lessons in San Francisco and the Bay Area, and also lists locations in the San Francisco/Bay Area and Lisbon, Portugal.

The program states that payment is required upon sign-up and that acceptable forms of payment include cash or Venmo. CAL Tennis has a 24-hour cancellation policy for all lessons and clinics, and asks families to reschedule at least 24 hours in advance by working with the coach to find the next available time. For rain or fog, the coach will contact participants as early as possible and cancel the lesson for safety. If a clinic has only one student signed up, that student can choose to do a private lesson at a reduced private lesson fee or have the class canceled. CAL Tennis also uses a waiver of liability and photo release form.

One parent, Liz D., reports that Frantz has coached her daughter for the past year and that her daughter has made what she describes as tremendous progress and looks forward to practice. Another participant, Gaurav G., describes the adult clinics as well run and enjoyable, and says Frantz balances instruction with play and keeps players moving. A third parent, Phillip H., describes Frantz as patient and experienced, with attention to detail on techniques and fundamentals, and says he would recommend him to anyone who wants to learn tennis.
