About
Camp Mendocino is an outdoor education and environmental awareness program owned and operated by Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco. Over 1000 campers attend Camp Mendocino each summer, with approximately 175 campers in each session. Camp Council at Camp Mendocino is a focus group that brings together campers, Leaders-in-Training (LITs), and staff to brainstorm and plan activities, programs, and improvements.
• Ages: 8–17 years old
The program’s mission is to enable and inspire all young people, especially those from disadvantaged circumstances, to realize their full potential as productive, responsible, and caring citizens. Traditionally, campers are ages 8–14, and teens who are 15 have the option to participate as campers if they choose not to enroll in the Leadership Program. Youth ages 15–17 are eligible to apply for the Leaders-in-Training (LIT) program, and after completing LIT, teens ages 16–17 may apply to become Counselors-in-Training (CIT). Once a 15-year-old decides to be a camper or LIT, that decision applies to all summer sessions, and they may not change programs partway through the summer.
Camp Mendocino is an Accredited Camp through the American Camp Association (ACA). Approximately 40% of campers are members of Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco, 60% come from all over the Bay Area, and a few come from different states or countries. Camp2College (C2C) is a year-round program for teens who excelled in the LIT Program, preparing them for post-secondary education or a defined plan after high school. Teens in Camp2College attend monthly workshops covering topics such as college applications, transcript evaluations, and different careers, and they have access to Camp and Boys & Girls Clubs of San Francisco staff as a support system.
A parent testimonial describes one camper returning from Camp Mendocino very happy after his first overnight camp, talking at length about everything he did and the people he met, and notes that he came back with a great sleep schedule and an air of more maturity.
