About
Independent FC (IFC) is a one-of-a-kind youth soccer club where kids play soccer through fall and spring teams, winter futsal, summer league, and tournaments. The program also includes after-school enrichment programs and clinics/camps. IFC offers soccer to more than 300 boys and girls on 25 teams ranging from micro soccer to high school, and fields teams at recreational, local competitive, and travel leagues.
• Schedule: IFC teams play in the fall and spring seasons, with winter futsal, summer league, and tournaments offered on a team-by-team basis.
• Price: IFC does not charge any fee to be in the club; families are asked to cover league fees and jerseys, and the club requests donations to help cover staff, scholarships, coaching, clinics/camps, field rentals, and other administrative expenses.
Independent FC is a program of America SCORES, a non-profit organization that has provided free soccer and after-school enrichment programs for over 20 years and has operated free, school-based soccer and enrichment programs in San Francisco since 2001. IFC is described as a “public” soccer club and a non-profit, donation-based club that is open to boys and girls who reside in San Francisco or are eligible to attend San Francisco public schools, and is a “donation based” soccer club open to any child regardless of ability to pay. The club’s mission is “To improve soccer in San Francisco and other communities, we must desegregate the game and eliminate all financial barriers to participation.”
IFC is operated by America SCORES Bay Area and works in close collaboration with Mission Youth Soccer League (MYSL), including close collaboration with MYSL for player and league registrations. The club has more than 300 players on 25 teams, with 84% from public schools and 16% from independent schools, and has teams playing in a variety of leagues including NorCal, SFYS, CCSL, SCORES, MYSL, SYFS, and Cal North leagues. Every effort is made to make practices convenient to families. The club has professional coaches, trained Youth Coaches, and volunteer coaches, and its goal is to balance equity and access with youth development and high quality soccer programs.
Independent FC is recognized as a “Project Play Champion” by the Aspen Institute for Sport and Society because of its commitment to access, equity, fun, and excellence. The club describes itself as changing the pay-to-play paradigm and making club soccer accessible to more San Francisco children and youth, creating high-quality soccer experiences by combining the passion of volunteer coaches with the knowledge of experienced, paid professional trainers, and working in close partnership with America SCORES to create pathways for players from public schools into community-based club soccer.
