About

Independent FC (IFC) is a one-of-a-kind youth soccer club where children take part in soccer, winter futsal, summer league play, tournaments, after-school enrichment programs, and clinics and camps. The club fields 25 teams, with more than 300 boys and girls participating across levels from micro soccer through high school. IFC is a “public” soccer club and a non-profit, donation-based club that does not charge any fees to join.

• Schedule: IFC teams play in the fall and spring seasons, with winter futsal, summer league, and tournaments offered on a team-by-team basis.
• Price: IFC does not charge any fee to be in the club; families are asked to cover league fees and jerseys, and the club requests donations to help cover staff, scholarships, coaching, clinics and camps, field rentals, and other administrative expenses.

Independent FC is a program of America SCORES, a non-profit organization that has provided free soccer and after-school enrichment programs for over 20 years and has operated free, school-based soccer and enrichment programs in San Francisco since 2001. IFC is open to boys and girls who reside in San Francisco or are eligible to attend San Francisco public schools, and it is for families from all of San Francisco. The club reports that 300+ players are on 25 teams, with 84% from public schools and 16% from independent schools, and that America SCORES and IFC are open to any and all.

Independent FC states that its goal is to balance equity and access with youth development and high quality soccer programs, and that it is changing the pay-to-play paradigm and making club soccer accessible to more San Francisco children and youth. Once players leave the SCORES after-school program, they are welcome to join IFC teams and continue on a path for soccer and youth development within a supportive community. IFC works in close partnership with America SCORES to create pathways for players from public schools into community-based club soccer.

The club is recognized as a “Project Play Champion” by the Aspen Institute for Sport and Society because of its commitment to access, equity, fun, and excellence. IFC collaborates closely with Mission Youth Soccer League (MYSL) for player and league registrations and has teams playing in a variety of leagues, including NorCal, SFYS, CCSL, SCORES, and MYSL; it also notes that teams play in SYFS, MYSL, SCORES, and Cal North leagues. The club fields teams at recreational, local competitive, and travel leagues and states that every effort is made to make practices convenient to families.

Independent FC’s children receive training from a community of coaches that includes paid professional coaches, trained Youth Coaches (college and high-school level players who serve as assistants), and volunteer coaches, combining the passion of volunteer coaches with the knowledge of experienced, paid professional trainers. IFC describes itself as a donation-based soccer club open to any child regardless of ability to pay and states, “Because soccer should be free.”
