About
The Joffrey San Francisco Summer Intensive offers daily ballet classes, daily pointe classes, and training in classical ballet technique, contemporary ballet, contemporary dance, modern, repertoire, and a culminating theater performance. Students also take classes in pointe, contemporary partnering, improvisation/composition, and Pilates & conditioning. In-person and virtual instruction options are available for this intensive, which focuses on contemporary ballet and concert dance.
• Ages: 10–18 years old
• Schedule: Classes are offered Monday–Friday in two one-week sessions, with Week 1 running July 21–25, 2025, Week 2 running July 28–August 1, 2025, and two weeks of attendance required for students who register to participate in the performance on Saturday, August 2; for 2026, dates are July 20–August 1, 2026.
• Price: Virtual instruction is $995 per week for 1 week or $899 per week for 2 weeks; housing is $825 per week for 1 week or $725 per week for 2 weeks for ages 12 and above; meal plans cost $299 per week and are required; additional fees include a $125 registration fee, an optional $99 weekly studio lunch plan for commuter students (50% due upon registration), a $150 performance fee for Performance Track students, an optional $100 roommate initial request fee, a 3.50% processing fee due at registration, and $625 in deposit and registration fees; tickets for the culminating performance cost $45.
Students can register for one or two weeks, and two weeks of attendance are required for those who choose the performance track and participate in the culminating theater performance, which has a 60-minute run time and will be recorded and available to purchase. Taking photos or videos during the performance is prohibited, and tickets for the culminating performance will be available on the intensive website on July 20, 2026. There will be a virtual orientation for students and parents on Thursday, July 17, 2025, at 6:00 PM PST/9:00 PM EST, and in-person program orientations on Monday, July 21, 2025, and Monday, July 28, 2025, for students starting on those dates; schedules and group assignments will be posted on the website and emailed no later than July 14, 2025.
Housing is optional and available for ages 12 and above, with community residents required to purchase the meal plan, which includes breakfast and dinner from Sunday evening until Friday morning and lunch Monday–Friday, and students staying multiple weeks receiving breakfast and dinner on the weekends. Live-in housing staff are available to students and parents 24 hours a day, assist with support and guidance at the dorm and studio, and students are escorted to and from the studio. San Francisco State University reserves the right to move housing students in this intensive to a different dorm on its campus, and Joffrey Ballet School will update the website and materials if the dorm location changes.
The faculty for the Joffrey San Francisco Summer Intensive is composed of working professionals, instructors, and choreographers who are prominent in the sphere of concert dance. Josie Walsh serves as Artistic Director of Joffrey San Francisco, as well as Artistic Director of the Joffrey Ballet School’s West Coast Summer Programs, JoffreyRED, and Joffrey West, and is the Founder, Artistic Director, and Choreographer of BalletRED. The broader Joffrey Ballet School leadership includes President Gail D'Addario, Executive Director Frank Lee Merwin, Associate Executive Director Nancy Cole, Director of Operations Hanro Janse Van Rensburg, Dean Meg Paul, and several artistic and administrative directors.
The Joffrey Ballet School was founded by Robert Joffrey and Gerald Arpino in 1953 and has remained on the forefront of American dance education for more than sixty years. Its mission statement is: “We empower passionate dance students at any stage in their journey to reach their greatest potential, transforming them into resilient, versatile open-minded artists by providing them with the highest quality professional and holistic dance training possible.” The Joffrey Ballet School New York City Trainee Program is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Dance.
The Joffrey Ballet School partners with Los Angeles–based contemporary ballet company BalletRED for the JoffreyRED Contemporary Ballet Apprenticeship Program, and it has a partnership with Universal Ballet Competition to launch the JBS x UBC Midwest Pre-Professional Ballet Summer Intensive in Iowa. The school is also affiliated with HEAT Convention & Competition for THE FORUM: A Symposium for the Integrity of Dance Education, curated by Angelica Stiskin in affiliation with Joffrey Ballet School. An audition is required for acceptance to the Joffrey San Francisco Summer Intensive, and the audition style is ballet.
