The academy was founded by Sifu Alexander Cardenas and Sifu Cindy Hom in September 2013 and is named after the Choy Lay Fut hand form Ng Ying Kuen (Five Animals Fist Form), which features the Dragon, Snake, Tiger, Panther, and Crane.

The leadership team includes Chief Instructors Sifu Alexander Cardenas and Sifu Cindy Hom, and Senior Instructor Sifu Daniel Hom. Both Sifu Alex and Sifu Cindy are high level black belt instructors, and Sifu Cindy has been a Certified Personal Trainer since 2003. Five Animals Kung Fu Academy is an affiliate of Tat Wong Kung Fu International and has been voted for Bay Area's Best Martial Arts. The academy offers a Women's Empowerment Program through Women's Kickboxing, welcomes both kids and adults, and offers a free trial class. It also has an app that provides instant access to the class schedule, events, and more, and offers martial arts and fitness to the West Portal/Parkside community.
